George Best was one of the greatest footballers who ever lived. But he was so much more than that. Although the football pitch was his arena, Best was essentially a pop star - young, stylish, strikingly beautiful, possessed of a creative confidence that bordered on arrogance, and worshipped by young men and women alike. Like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. This film is simultaneously a celebration of a genius and an exploration of the demons that brought him down. We all know how these biopics traditionally work: in this case a talented but innocent young man from the backstreets of a divided but still pre-Troubles Belfast, becomes a star. But his time at the top is agonizingly short: a family history of alcoholism doesn’t help, in those pre-drug Sixties everyone wanted to buy him a drink, and before he was thirty, he was a washed up drunk. But we’re taking the Benjamin Button approach here. No-one wants to go out on a downer, with the end card telling us how many hundreds of thousands lined the streets of his home town to bid him farewell, along with the millions watching on live television.

Life in the Midlands in 1980 should be fun, but when all your hopes hang on a Saturday afternoon score line, there’s too much left to chance. For Jonathan Stadler, he’s trying to navigate his way safely through school and home life – and failing miserably. He can’t even love his football team in peace. Tuning in his lucky radio to hear if Villa can win or if he’s confined to misery for the rest of the weekend and then further torment on Monday at school. Jonathan leans heavily on his Grandad for comfort and support to help him through. THE ROAD OF EXCESS is a film about mental health, addiction, toxic masculinity, and the loss of fame through the eyes of ex-Dirty Sanchez star Matt Pritchard. Dirty Sanchez was a Welsh “Jackass” that was one of MTV Europe’s most popular shows in the early ’00s. After its end, Matt fell into darker times. Through the stories shared with his co-stars, his mother and his best friend, we learn about the fallout they suffered. From mental health issues such as depression to substance addiction and then more physical conditions. Dealing with these demons Matt exchanged one addiction for another, endurance sports. Each time the challenge has to be bigger and at the end of 2020 he decides to join a team to row across the Atlantic. THE ROAD OF EXCESS parallels Matt’s rise and fall with the arc of this row. Will fifty days at sea, rowing two hours on and two hours off help him find peace? He doesn't know why but since signing up it is all he dreams of. What will this latest expedition teach him? Will he find balance? Or has losing himself meant his journey will never end?

Allie Clarke is a twenty something office clerk who is failing an interview for a Team Leader role. Outside of work, he decides to start a cricket team to keep his friends out of trouble over the summer. He recruits colleagues and boys from football who he doesn’t necessarily get on with. This all takes place against the backdrop of parades and protests and what seems like an inability for the older members of the various communities to move on from the past. Allie is also being terrorised by a loose cannon detective called Spesh who will go to any lengths to save his own back including illegal interrogation techniques. The team struggle from one game to the next, arguing with each other but steadily improving. The season culminates with a game against Spesh and the police. Allie defeats a different sort of interrogation and exposes Spesh for the coward he is. Allie is interviewed again for the Team Leader role and this time gets the job drawing on the experience he has gained since the last interview.

The vicious incident occurred after Paret grabbed the buttock of his opponent and called him a homosexual at the weigh-in. In reality Griffith led a secret life as a bisexual man, but in 1962, such a thing was taboo and most especially in the macho culture of boxing.

The Von Erichs (real name Adkisson) began their wrestling dynasty when Fritz Von Erich (born Jack Barton Adkisson) became a star in the National Wrestling Alliance, holding multiple belts in the 1960s before becoming president of the organisation. He died in 1997. He and his wife Doris had six sons, five of whom died before their father, which led to talk of a curse, colloquially dubbed the ‘Von Erich curse’. Today, two sons of Kevin Von Erich, the last surviving brother, are both pro wrestlers with Major League Wrestling. In 2009, the Von Erich family were inducted by Michael “P.S.” Hayes into the WWE Hall of Fame.

However Lucifer double crosses the Lord into raising the stakes – and God ends up gambling on not just saving Brian’s soul but the souls of the entire world all on the outcome of one football match. Now all that stands between Brian and redemption is the Devil. And all that stands between the Devil and seven billion souls is God and the hapless footballing skills of one Deportivo Wanka FC. The final battle between darkness and light has just been dropped at the feet of a Sunday football team. God help us.
