Ray Davies, an audacious lead singer and songwriter and one of rock’s most iconic musicians, formed a partnership with his brother Dave, a hugely gifted guitarist, which was as legendary as that of Lennon and McCartney or Jagger and Richards. After their meteoric rise to fame, the young brothers were plunged into the hedonistic world of the 1960s rock explosion, and their volatile relationship became notorious.
In the UK, The Kinks had 17 Top 20 singles (including You Really Got Me, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Waterloo Sunset and Lola) and five Top 10 albums. The band were famously banned from the USA at the height of their fame, but have still sold an estimated 50 million albums worldwide. Their influence has gone on to shape three decades of rock.

Bizarrely, they achieved global success from a damp squat in south London, and ultimately burnt most of their profits (1 million quid) in a legendary act of nihilism on a remote Scottish island. The explosive artistic partnership of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty is utterly unique in the history of music and art and continues to inspire artists and audiences the world over. When London busker Barney inherits a tumbledown cottage in a rundown Spanish village, all he wants to do is sell it, and go back home – before the villagers discover that he is the son of the man who ruined the village in the first place.
But to sell the house, Barney needs money to fix it up. So with help from local musician Paloma (and despite her ex-boyfriend’s interference), he sets about reforming the village band, aiming to win some prize money in an upcoming competition.
