Synopsis

The Mortician is a contemporary urban noir shot in digital 3D. The story of a man coming in from the cold, stepping from darkness to light. A man returning to the human race. A tale of revenge and retribution that is both soulful and brutal. The banking system is failing, and the city is bankrupt. The poor are corralled into lawless ghettos. The crime rate soars, but as long as the violence doesn't spill into their fancy backyards, the politicians don't care. In the decaying city, he processes corpses with a steely disregard. His work is conducted with a ritualistic eye for detail and an unyielding adherence to routine. The Mortician (Method Man) is alienated and cold. Emotionally isolated and lonely, his work is his purpose, his fascination with taxidermy his only distraction. An insomniac, he walks the deserted ghetto streets at night, watching the creatures of the night go about their business. The Mortician is a contemporary urban fairytale, one that triumphs kindness over cruelty. A story of reconciliation and hope in face of violence and darkness.

The Ramp shows Jeff's struggle to get a ramp fitted at the entrance to his council flat, so he can leave his home with the help of a wheelchair. The money all in place, the ramp delayed for a year due to bureaucratic stumbling blocks about permissions not granted to extend a ramp into a parking space of the estate where Jeff's flat is located. A once independent and vivacious man is reduced to confinement in his home for over 6 months while the authorities argue about his status, until he dies. Made as a 5 minute short for 'reelhealthstories', to be shown to medical students about the actual impact of their recommendations, and the human cost of agencies working cross side each other.

In the aftermath of World War 1, an expectant bride from a well-to-do family marries her young lover. No happy-ever-after tale this, and The Tenement Ghost draws us swiftly into a sordid world of violence and despair. Yes, it begins well enough, the couple embarking on a grand European honeymoon, but the groom's thirst for alcohol is shortly apparent. Returning to begin their new life together, the bride finds her efforts to nurture the marriage thwarted by her husband's excessive drinking. He dominates the relationship but spirals into alcoholism, his arrogance and self-loathing manifest in physical and emotional violence. Her rapid transition from starry-eyed bride to battered wife is marked by the appearance of a ghostly apparition and, though we are never sure whether this spectre is real or simply a fantasy borne of her brutal situation, its appearances become more frequent as her personality disintegrates. The death of their unborn child pushes her ever closer to the edge of sanity until the ghostly visitor's promptings finally impel her into a last desperate attempt to free herself from torment, bringing the Tenement Ghost to its ghastly and appalling climax.
