Synopsis

Stuck is a nightmare, cliff-hanger in which the 'central' character is trapped in a situation and tormented by illusions of freedom. My intentions as the filmmaker was to produce a self-reþexive, absurd puzzle which experiments with ideas revolving around the sometimes-ominous power of the 'sanctuary of the screen'.

This 3-hour documentary tells the story of Studio One, Jamaica's most important record label in the history of Reggae. Filmed in Kingston, the documentary has interviews with many of the artists who Studio One made famous - Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott etc. The main interview is with Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd, owner and founder, and the documentary tells the story of his life and the impact he has had on Reggae music in Jamaica and the rest of the world. Studio One is the foundation label of Jamaican Reggae. Often described as the Motown of Jamaica, Studio One is where the career of literally hundreds of Reggae artists began - Bob Marley and the Wailers, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, Burning Spear - everyone! Lee Perry was a handyman there and Prince Buster a bouncer. The film also visits Trenchtown's old Dancehalls, the Alpha School for wayward Boys (run by Nuns), Tuff Gong Studios and Pressing Plant, Orange street (Jamaica's Tin Pan Alley) and many sites relating to the story. There is rarely seen vintage footage of musical performances, interviews, Haile Selaisse's arrival in Jamaica and even early music videos (from the 1960s). Much of this footage has rarely been seen outside Jamaica. Music is featured heavily in the documentary and the film mixes narrative and musical elements throughout.

Christmas Eve 2001: Seamus - a lonely poster-paster who works the night shift at Aldwych tube station - is taken on a nocturnal journey by the spirit of a deceased train driver. Having resigned himself to a life of drudgery and routine, the poster-paster's drab existence is questioned by the spirits of those who have died in the station throughout its 100 year history. Subterrain is a modern day fable that uses as its inspiration the story of Dickens' A Christmas Carol in the setting of Dante's Divine Comedy, with a conclusion akin to It's A Wonderful Life.

As Suzie Gold's sister prepares to get married, it seems only natural that Suzie's thoughts should turn to the state of her own love-life. While the pressure builds for her to tie the knot, Suzie is forced to decide what she really wants out of life - and whether to follow the path laid out for her, or to make her own way through uncharted territory. A romantic comedy set in the vibrant and colourful world of North London, full of humour, spunk and warmth, Suzie Gold conveys the universal struggle of finding one's true identity amidst social conventions and family tradition.
