JOSIE loses her lover JAMES in a car accident, and decides to break or bend whatever rules she has to to get him back. Haunted by memories of JAMES, JOSIE uses every means in her power to clone him.

When it looks as though she is failing, her grasp on reality falters and she becomes desperate. But then it seems she has succeeded after all, when she brings home a baby.

But babies just don't arrive from out of the blue, and despite JOSIE'S explanations, her sister, RUTH becomes suspicious. When RUTH reads a baby has been abducted she goes to the police, and despite JOSIE'S protests, the baby is taken away.

Solicitors and therapists try to get the 'truth' from JOSIE, who realises that her only way out is to confess to the abduction, again and again.

Years later JOSIE meets a young student, PAUL, who is uncannily like JAMES and before long they become lovers.

PAUL finds the photographs of JAMES which JOSIE had hidden away. He accuses her of using him to replace her old lover, but realises there is more to the situation than that. Disgusted with JOSIE, he leaves her, despite her protests, once again alone.

It is night and all seems quiet on Tweedy's Farm. But someone - or something - stirs in the shadows - It is Ginger, a chicken with a mission. She and her fellow flock are determined to escape the egg farm where any chicken who doesn't make her quota can meet a fowl fate.

There's Bunty, a champion egg-layer and proud of it; Babs, kind-hearted but decidedly bird-brained; Mac, the Scottish chicken who has all the skills of an engineering genius; and Fowler, the farm's elderly cockerel, who constantly reminisces about his wartime exploits in the R.A.F.

Every one of the chickens' many escape attempts under the fence, over the fence, even masquerading as Mrs. Tweedy is thwarted, and the ringleader, Ginger, is tossed into 'the cooler' by Mr. Tweedy.

Undaunted, Ginger is contemplating yet another escape attempt, when she witnesses the impossible - a rooster named Rocky comes flying over the fence into the farm. Ginger sees her salvation - if he can fly into the farm, she and the rest of the brood can fly out. She agrees to hide Rocky if he will teach the rest of the flock how to fly.

But even as the chickens attempt to fly up, the egg count continues to go down - a fact not lost on the greedy Mrs. Tweedy, who decides that chickens who aren't laying profits - can be baked for profits as chicken pies.

Christie Malry is a simple man. He lives with his mother and works in a bank. He discovers the principles of Double Entry Book-Keeping, for every Debit there must be a Credit, and the picture becomes clear: Debit Christie for offence received, Credit society for offence given.

Christie opens his account with society and the reckoning begins, all accounts to be settled in full. His mother dies, he gets a girlfriend, the future looks bright. He starts to make the books balance with seemingly trivial acts of vandalism, but the clearer Christie sees the more he is owed and his actions escalate and all the while he remains in the eyes of the world a lowly clerk. Christie Malry is unstoppable but is brought to book in the end with bitter irony.

With Christie's discovery of Double Entry we are thrown back in time to 15th century Italy and the inventor of modern accounting, a Dominican priest Fra Luca Pacioli. The past and present interweave.

This is a black comedy, a fable for our time. Christie is the logical conclusion of a society devoted to money and its acquistion at all costs.

In the end what emerges is not only a remarkable encounter with a young woman, but also a story that has broader implications about being young, being at the cusp of adulthood, and finding one's identity.
