Synopsis

Edinburgh. Best friends Jed, Anna and Eve are closer than family and can't image a world in which the others aren't there to share the heartache and happiness of their lives. Now, Jed is in trouble. Investors in his nightclub want their money back and he can't pay up. At the same time, his girlfriend Anna is tiring of a relationship that seems to be going nowhere. She meets pornographer Perrot whose jet set lifestyle seems to offer her a way out. Charmed by his promises, she auditions for his next erotic film. Eve has problems of her own. Crippled by the past, she drives through long, dark nights listening to tapes of conversations with her analyst, desperately seeking the strength to break free from the grip of the arms dealing family who oppose her hedonistic lifestyle. When her brother arrives for a final showdown, she decides to take direct action against their impossible demands. Jed seeks his escape in a short lived relationship with the beautiful but unbalanced Emily who sees him as a kindred spirit in a hostile world. Trying to make sense of the chaos of their lives, the ties of friendship unravel as they all realise that things must change. Only by confronting the legacy of the past are they free to embrace the possibilities that come when night ends and daybreak dawns.

Based on Martin Amis' critically acclaimed second novel, Dead Babies has been adapted for the screen by William Marsh, who also makes his directional debut. With a cast headed up by Paul Bettany (Gangster No.1) and Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense, Rushmore) the film puts on view the best of Britain's new wave of acting talent. When a group of young English friends, living together in a bizarre house just outside of London, invite three Americans over for a drug fuelled weekend, things really kick off. As the two cultures collide and the chemicals take over, it soon becomes apparent that one of the weekend guests is a member of a newly formed net-based terrorist group, The Conceptualists, whose underlying principle is extreme violence for its own sake. It also becomes apparent that the assembled guests are the next intended victims for the Group's website. The party stops partying. Directed with energy and pace, Dead Babies throws its audience through a roller-coaster ride of distraction, derision and destruction.

It is March 1997 after eighteen years of Tory rule, Britain is at a political cross-roads. The prime minister of a beleaguered government decides to go to the country in a vain attempt at persuading the electorate that his party is worthy of a fifth term in office. Meanwhile, one William Davies, widower and retired quarryman, has arrived at a cross-roads of his own. A lifelong socialist, he feels angry and resentful towards a government that has all but abandoned him in his old age. Having been persuaded by his children to buy his council house in the booming eighties, he discovers that this selfsame government, which made such a virtue of home ownership some ten years earlier, now expects him to sell the property in order to pay for his care should he ever have to go into a nursing home. When William Davies walks out of his council house one morning, he is putting into action a desperate and hair-brained scheme which he thinks will outflank the system. But things go badly wrong when the old man realises that he has made a terrible mistake.
