Synopsis

The last in the Fish in the Machine trilogy. A yellow puffer fish, caught in a world of mirrors, flickers from colour to high contrast black and white, in syncopation with the percussive rhythms of gamelan music. Suddenly, the video changes tone, incorporating an extract from a television broadcast with rather more political and social consequences for us all.

They have been hangouts for bohemians, bikers and office boys, but the classic London cafe - steamy, formica-clad, with wooden banquettes and booths - is fast disappearing as rents rise and tastes change. These three films follow four cafes on the verge of closure: They are worlds of their own, a form of social club for the regulars who have been going there for twenty years, and an imtegral part of London culture that may not be around much longer.

The filmmaker returns to her hometown - Stowmarket - a sleepy backwater in rural Suffolk where nothing much ever happens. As she sits with her camera in the local taxi office, a variety of characters pass through - from restless children and old school friends to drunken squaddies. While they sit and wait for their taxis to arrive they share their dreams, desires and disappointments.

In 1948 during the Greek civil war, 28 thousand children, Greek and Macedonian, were taken from their villages by the communist-led Democratic Army and raised in orphanages in Eastern Europe. The Greeks never allowed the Macedonian children back. 50 years later the 'children' marked the anniversary of their journey. They dance and sing and yearn for their lost villages. The Greek civil war has faded into history, but the Macedonian 'children' remain its forgotten victims.

A film poem about London in the last hours of the twentieth century. It is composed of documentary footage shot between midday and midnight on 31st December 1999. I shot it in black and white at 16 fps and telecine-ed it at 25 fps in order to give it the jerky look of an old Edwardian film.

My Mum's a Morris dancing vicar. Her Morris dancing friends are a diverse bunch, an opera singer, a long distance lorry driver and an engineer, united by this odd English tradition. By day they hold down responsible jobs, by night they dress in eccentric disguise and dance a strange jig.

After the genocide of 1994, the Rwandan government temporarily suspended history from the school curriculum. The characters in After Years of Walking - children, teachers, genocide killers, students and historians - all find themselves in an uncertain zone between the old history and a new one.   The filmmaker found a feature film about the history of Rwanda, made in 1959 by Belgian missionaries. She took this film back to Rwanda as an entry point into Rwanda's search for history.
