Synopsis

The true story of a man who conned his way into London's high life by pretending to be reclusive director Stanley Kubrick, based on events during the shooting of Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut, in London in 1998-99.   A man pretending to be the legendary director, despite knowing very little about his work and looking nothing like him, gets into many of the city's most exclusive parties, restaurants and nightclubs, playing on his willing victims' starstruck desire to believe. The film is as much about the foibles of ordinary people, and the contemporary obsession with celebrity, as it is about the fantasy life and hilarious cons perpetrated by the dingy hero.

Synopsis

Riding high on his third Shafta Lifetime Achievement award, Rod Shuffler proclaims his intent to realise an Oscar-worthy feature film, to secure his place in Hollywood. Working closely with his old-boy network and production company 'Blue Hardest', auditions are held and Rod reluctantly casts newcomer Sandy Shores in the role of Chastity Cincture to play opposite adult film legend David Goliath as Dirk Starbutt. After a less than successful screening of rough-cut dailies to the financial backers, Rod must relinquish creative control. The financiers are pushing for run-of-the-mill hardcore adult entertainment but Rod resists steering in that direction, instead opting for a simulated sex scene. With the financial backers less than impressed with simulated sex, the decision is made to rewrite the script and have Chastity murdered.

Ben Jones is a tired, worn-out, depressed, fed-up, Welsh lawyer who lives in the shadow of his bigger, larger than life, over the top, promiscuous, TV celebrity brother Harry. Ben hankers after his lost love, the fiery red-headed Sinead, but in a fit of pique decides to accept the marriage proposal from his brow-beating, ball-bustin' girlfriend Ceri Sian. So Harry decides that he must do something 'good' for his brother. In fact he must bring him back to Ireland where the boys had a great time in their youth. This act of 'generosity', combined with a recce for a future television programme, begins a series of events that will change their lives forever but 'in a good way', where everyone gets a second chance, sort of.

Deadpan Valentine is a black comedy that follows the adventures of two very different flatmates during one grim Valentine's Day. In essence, it's an Anti Rom-Com. Two young men, Scott and Jamie, share a grubby London council flat. Scott seems to think he’s got it made; he’s got a lovely head of hair, a beautiful new girlfriend and a bit on the side. If one man wasn’t blessed enough, he’s also the natural successor to Marlon Brando and a fringe theatre play appears to the ideal vehicle for his talent. However, today is the perfect day for a few lessons in love and acting. Jamie is severely depressed. Valentine’s Day is an insult too far and suicide seems like the only way out. But he doesn’t have much luck completing the task. In his befuddled state of mind, he answers the door to a gun-toting stranger, Bruce, who mistakes him for Scott. Bruce takes Jamie captive and is surprised to discover that his 'hard man' routine does little to unnerve his straight-faced hostage.

The Graduate meets Harold and Maude in this rites-of-passage comedy with yet another dreary school holiday coming around for the shy and downtrodden Ben (Rupert Grint). Seventeen years of living in an absurdly conservative and traditional household with his highly-strung and overbearing mother (Laura Linney) and quiet, mild-mannered vicar father have taken their toll on young Ben. While the other kids are out having fun, Ben spends these precious few weeks attending Bible classes, having driving lessons with his mother and helping out at a local old people's home. However, Ben's world is turned upside down when he's employed by an eccentric retired actress Evie (Julie Walters). Vulgar, dignified and childish all at once, she certainly is not the kind of person Ben expected when searching through the job listings in the stuffy parish magazine, Hello Jesus. Evie enters Ben's life with a cataclysmic force, whisking him away on a series of adventures from camping to performing Shakespeare in the garden, to attending the Edinburgh Festival - where he finally meets a girl much nearer his own age. Evie's unconventional and often downright bizarre behaviour challenges Ben's beliefs, and forces him to confront the very idea of who he wants to be.
