The radical new take on Dickens’ classic seeks both to exhume the original story’s gritty commentary on social inequality and the corrupting influence of greed, and to breathe new life into the lyricism of the original text by setting its scenes to extraordinary tableaux of modern dance.
The opening scenes of the film follow a Victorian family preparing a toy theatre for their annual performance of 'A Christmas Carol'. As the family's grandmother narrates the much-edited story and her grandchildren change the scenery, we enter the imagination of one of the children in the audience and watch as the cardboard stage, and the story with it, transforms into a darkly fantastical otherworld.

Synopsis

In the dead of night, a car arrives at a secluded country cottage. Bickering constantly, brothers David and Peter climb out to inspect the hideaway. It seems just perfect for their plans. Although barely on speaking terms, the pair have set aside their differences for a quick money making scheme, the kidnapping of mob boss Arnie's daughter, who they plan to hold to ransom. Tracey, bound, gagged and unconscious, is locked in the trunk of the car.
 
Aiding them in their ploy is Tracey's black sheep step-brother Andrew. Screaming threats and violent insults, Tracey fights like a wildcat and the hapless trio begin to panic and argue amongst themselves, totally unaware that Andrew was followed. Outside, two of Arnie's most feared henchmen are already circling the cottage.

With Arnie on his way and the game almost up, Tracey turns the tables on her captors and, with Peter as her hostage, escapes through the nearby woods seeking refuge in a remote farmhouse in the hope of finding a telephone to alert her father.

As David and Andrew close in on her trail, they soon discover something far more terrifying is lurking in the darkness, The Farmer, a monstrous, blood-thirsty serial killer, and the stage is set for a grotesquely comic battle for survival.

Disillusioned, middle class accountant Tom (Steven Mackintosh) has lost everything, including the will to live. In the back streets of London he searches for a gun. When he meets D (Ashley Walters), a homeless drug addict, Tom thinks he can buy what he needs without getting his hands dirty. But what D's offering comes with more than just a price tag.

In a derelict warehouse, the transaction is underway. But D stalls, he is loving the rarity of a captive audience for his incessant, high-octane chatter. Elsewhere, local crime Kingpin Hoodwink (Andy Serkis) explodes with anger. He has been robbed in his own home, and he wants the culprit and his property back - now.

Bursting into the warehouse, Hoodwink is quick to lay into D with the beating of a lifetime. Tom intervenes, and for his efforts, he too, receives a savage beating from Hoodwink.

Desperate for his life, D points the finger at three others. Hoodwink leaves to continue his rampage elsewhere, but both D and Tom know it's only a matter of time before Hoodwink discovers the truth about the gun - and returns to find it, and them.

With the impending threat of Hoodwink on their backs, D and Tom play an intense game of cat and mouse, scrambling to cut a deal and make sense of the very lives they may be about to lose .
