Synopsis

A feature length documentary on the life and work of Sir Ian McKellen. Fully authorised, including access to private photo albums and a wealth of never-before-seen archive material, including diaries written when he was 12 and unseen behind the scenes of theatre shows and films.
The documentary is built around a 14 hour interview covering everything from his upbringing to becoming a theatre star, to coming out and being a leader in the gay rights movement, to his film stardom from Magneto to Gandalf, and personal thoughts on everything from acting to old age and death.

Synopsis

A coming of age drama set in Edinburgh about the interwoven and unravelling lives of teenage daughter Violet, and her two mothers.
When Violet and her adoptive mum Cathy unexpectedly run into Violet’s estranged birth-mum Zoe, the mothers clash. As Violet struggles to navigate this complicated relationship, becoming increasingly confused and angry, Cathy struggles to help her.
The meeting also triggers something in Zoe, who decides to change the direction of her life. She returns to Edinburgh, not only a city that holds dark memories of a difficult past for her, but it’s the place where Violet lives.
Violet and Zoe reconnect secretly online, but Cathy finds out and brings all communications to an abrupt end. Violet rebels against her and as Zoe self-destructively spirals out of control, Cathy must urgently try to find a way back in to Violet’s life.

The film tells three interlocking stories: the story of a historical community devastated by the disaster, struggling to survive; the story of a contemporary community, decimated by the loss of industry, rediscovering itself in the struggle to remember; and the story of a sculptor, struggling to make one last masterpiece. The story of an unlikely friendship forged in isolation. After a particularly harsh winter Brian goes into a deep depression; completely isolated and with no one to talk to, Brian does what any sane person would do when faced with such a melancholic situation, he builds a robot. Charles is that robot.
While life is pretty rosy for a while, tensions begin to rise between the pair. Partly due to the fact that Charles has the cognitive ability of a 4-year-old child and completely due to the fact that he keeps eating Brian's cabbages. Things soon come to a head and Brian is forced to make a decision he may soon come to regret.
