Synopsis

Manchester, North of England, 1976. The now much diminished, but still claustrophobic and dysfunctional, Khan family continues to struggle for survival. Sajid, the youngest Khan, the runt of the litter, is deep in pubescent crisis and under heavy assault both from his father’s tyrannical insistence on Pakistani tradition, as well as the fierce bullies in the schoolyard.

In a last, desperate attempt to ‘sort him out’, his father decides to pack him off to Mrs Khan No 1 and family in the Punjab, the wife and daughters he had abandoned 35 years earlier. It is not long before Ella Khan (Mrs Khan No 2), with a small entourage from Salford, England, swiftly follows to sort out the mess, past and present. Sequel to East is East, West is West is the coming of age story of both 15 year old Sajid and of his father, 60 year old George Khan.

Synopsis

This film is the first to document the life and work of the Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist, William McLaren. From humble beginnings in the 1920s in Cardenden, a mining town in Fife, McLaren went on to produce work in some of the finest houses in the UK.

His illustrations appeared regularly in the 1950s and 1960s in the BBC's Radio Times. He became a prolific book illustrator and designer of dust jackets for over 150 books.

In 1966 a commission to create a series of paintings for Hopetoun House near Edinburgh was the breakthrough for McLaren, leading to decorative commissions in private houses and public buildings where he developed his trompe l'oeil style.

The filmmakers have traced hundreds of works by McLaren and many of these are included in this documentary, together with testimony from those who knew him. He died in 1987, aged 64, leaving behind a range of work that will surprise and delight many people.

Wandering from a dead house party and out through the wilderness, a woman witnesses a man setting fire to clothes on a secluded bridge. Intrigued, she follows him into the night, watching as he engages in more acts of destruction. Drawn closer towards the man and his increasingly bizarre behavior, the woman chooses to intervene.

In a bare room, a doberman sleeps on the floor, tied to a rusty metal block. On the other side of the room is a woman. She is barely clothed and lying on an old bed, tied up. It is clear that she has been there for a long time. The bed is covered in stains, the woman’s wrists and ankles are raw from struggling against the ties, and her face is stained with tears. The room's two windows are blacked out with bin bags and the only sound that can be heard is the monotonous hum of an air vent.
When she surprisingly manages to free one of her hands, the dog begins an incessant angry barking. The woman hurries to free herself from the complex knots but it is difficult for her to concentrate as the doberman is pulling on his own rope, lunging at her.

All the noise alerts her mysterious captor and he heads for the room. The woman manages to free herself and she tears at a window, ripping open a binbag. Under the bag, she discovers a metal meshing stopping her from getting to the window itself. Footsteps approach. Can she make it?

This feature length documentary, filmed over nearly three years, follows the renowned artist Vik Muniz and a group of landfill scavengers on an emotional journey from the America's biggest garbage dump in Rio de Janeiro to the most prestigious auction houses and museums in the world via the alchemic transformation of garbage into art. Vik's initial objective was simply to 'paint' the people with garbage, however his journey with the scavengers takes him beyond the limits of what art can achieve.

Synopsis

You're the Stranger Here is a story about a middle-aged woman with a crazy leg. She lives in a fascist regime where people with her condition get shot on the spot. Inspired by the courageous death of one of her fellow sufferers, she goes on an all or nothing quest to change the world, falling in love with her executor in the process.
