Synopsis

Kevin (Stuart Brennan) has landed himself a days work with painter and decorator Ian (Tom Wontner). Kevin is very keen to become 'mates' , but the cold-hearted Ian is having none of it. During the day Kevin witnesses Ian's hypocrisy and selfish disrespect for others, and sees how, although legal, his behaviour is totally immoral. Kevin begins to adapt his behaviour as well, but it become more and more uncomfortable for him.

Synopsis

Hector was eight when his father brought him to Gainesville, in the heart of the American south. Olga was 12 when her father swam the Rio Grande with her on his back. Thomas was 16 when his mother put him on a bus alone, with a bag of tacos for the 2,000-mile journey. Lost in Gainesville retraces their journey, as they tell their stories of growing up among lost hopes and dreams, in a town where work has dried up, where fascists march against them and where rich whites live out lives of faded glory.

Synopsis

Zoë Verne is a regular at Club Dis, the city's hottest subculture superclub. But late one evening she leaves distraught, and is set upon by four dark figures. All she hears is a snarl - she's dead before she can scream. Detective Alex Taylor has it all, but he's losing it fast. His career is on a downward spiral; his fiancée is a stranger to him; and now he's handling Zoë's death - seemingly killed by a wild animal - but the closer he looks, the more the ground falls from beneath his feet. Forensic evidence shows Zoë was addicted to a drug derived from a fungus called Ergot. During the Dark Ages, whole villages were driven mad by eating infected wheat, giving rise to the myth of the Werewolf. Alex suspects Zoë's death is related to this drug, and that the owner of Club Dis is involved, preying on his clientele, luring them into addiction, prostitution and worse. The manager tells Alex nothing; but one of the regulars takes Alex in. At first Alex is appalled by the decadence and free expression. But the more Alex experiences, the more he is drawn into this new life. But more deaths occur, implicating the owner’s female lieutenants - and Alex realises he's in more danger than he'd imagined. Alex returns to Club Dis to bring the owner and his girls to justice, but soon finds himself facing an even greater dilemma than he had ever feared.

(2b) A part song. Three women strive for freedom in a town. Do they have beauty on their side? London disintegrates and looks like the Third World, yet construction moves on apace. Eve runs a successful club, but appears to be alone, and searches for spiritual guidance in an esoteric bookshop. Mitzura paints a memory of her Romanian mother's communion with wolves, and travels to see her children at the sea. Why must she leave them? Charlie works in an office and is trapped in Groundhog Day with her man. Why doesn't she leave? We watch their confusion, pain and joy, their smiles and fears - their faces a terrain of emotion. The friction of the interior world is made palpable. They drink: to forget, to connect (in a nation of alcoholics?). They wait, wonder and wander, for what? Why? For the madrigal?

Synopsis

Making Waves is a romantic comedy about a group of disparate ham-radio enthusiasts. These include a lonely video-store owner, a drunken Russian cosmonaut marooned on the space station Mir, a paranoid conspiracy nut, a Californian surfer and an elderly Welsh priest. Two of them exaggerate who they are on the air-waves assuming they'll never actually bump into each other. Unfortunately, when they fall in love with each other's imaginary personas things start to get complicated - especially when they find themselves having to meet face-to-face and are forced to try and live up to their fictitious alter-egos.

When I was given a college brief to produce a short about an everyday activity in a style of my choice, I was immediately drawn to the beauty of time-lapse photography. I as a visual artist see every morning as an inspiration, be it a bright sunny morning, or dull and misty winter mornings especially with a frost or snow covering. At this time of day, I was intrigued by how many of the early morning activities would be perceived in time-lapse photography. In particular, as for a number of my projects, I was inspired by the works of Ron Fricke (Baraka, 1992) and Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi, 1983, both of which are renowned for using this haunting style of cinematography. Matutinus (early in the morning) is an experimental short, which I wrote to depict the start of a day and how it can start off really well and can go onto to turn out bad. Images of people going about their daily business go into the not so 'fluffy bunny' images of graveyards, domestic arguments and civilised madness. At this time of the day the landscape can be transformed into a somewhat mesmerising atmosphere and can in a way it can be the calm before storms ahead. As the day goes on many people experience an uphill struggle, be it at work or at study. Matutinus shows my vision of this through a series of time-lapsed photography and experimental imagery.

Synopsis

A 20-something American, Chris, visits his friend Julian who lives in London. Shortly afterwards, Julian is sent to Scotland leaving Chris stranded in his flat. Chris ventures out alone but gets lost and mugged. He meets Lisa, who, feeling pity, helps him. During their brief meeting Chris and Lisa bicker, leaving their differences unresolved. Disgusted with his behaviour Chris spends the rest of the story searching for her, only to come face to face with the cynicism and manipulation of Londoners.

An early morning day in the London financial district, just like any other. Problem is, things are not always as they seem and business propositions can sometimes find a dead end.
