G.M. is a surrealist film in which an Edwardian gentleman is alternately tormented and rescued by spirits who appear through holes in his sitting-room wallpaper. It was inspired by the work of film pioneer Georges Melies.

Synopsis

Set amongst the high rise estates of Glasgow, the home of many recently arrived asylum seekers as part of the government's dispersal programme. The drama begins during an apparently commonplace winter flu epidemic. But doctors are puzzled by the strange symptoms of this flu and cannot understand why it is only affecting a relatively small cross-section of the community. One asylum support unit worker is not satisfied by the flu argument and wonders if environmental health hazards are to blame. But when one man dies, the post mortem results reveal the shocking truth - the deadly germ anthrax killed him. But even in the face of this evidence, the authorities are unwilling to believe what is becoming increasingly obvious - that north Glasgow has been subject to a silent and deadly terrorist attack. Someone has deliberately released anthrax amongst the immigrant community and the panic both inside and outside the hospital is mounting fast. Central to the drama is a Kurdish refugee, Sherko, and his 12 year old daughter, Resa. Sherko remembers the full horror of being gassed in northern Iraq by Saddam Hussein and now watches in horror as his daughter succumbs to the deadly infection.

Bob Montagnet is an American gambler and thief, who has ended up in the South of France, out of luck and out of money. But he is also a heroin addict, his habit fed by Said, a young Algerian. As the film opens, Bob is gambling in an illegal joint run by Remi, a local pimp. He is losing, as he has been for months. In his heroin induced haze, he meets Anne, a young Eastern European girl 'trapped' by Remi. Bob is taken by her beauty and in particular her lucky eyes. When the place is raided by the police, Bob saves the life of Roger, the detective. We soon realise the two men are oddly united by a special bond stretching back years. Bob saves Anne from Remi's clutches and leaves her in his young friend Paulo's safe hands. When Bob hits rock bottom after losing the last of his cash at the races, his other henchman Raoul, suggests he join them in their plans for one last, spectacular heist in Monte Carlo. After shaking off his junkie habit, Bob reforms the old gang. With the help of security genius Vladimir, they plan to rob not the safe of the Riviera Casino, but the vault, which contains priceless works of art.

He follows them to Blackpool from the Midlands on his beloved Honda 50, stopping and meeting an odd variety of new friends on the road who in different ways help him work out what he has to do to mend his broken heart and salvage the rest of this life. The film is a humorous tale of innocence seen through the eyes of a man who has never quite grown up and must, for the first time, confront the outside world. It is set in the beautiful, mysterious landscape of the Peak District in the North of England, populated by a bizarre collection of campers, ramblers and hikers all at one with their surroundings.
