Synopsis

The turbulent life of first world war poet, Siegfried Sassoon, through the eyes of the revered filmmaker Terence Davies.
Sassoon was a complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the first world war and was decorated for his bravery but who became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service. His poetry was inspired by his experiences on the Western Front and he became one of the leading war poets of the era.
Adored by members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, he embarked on affairs with several men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality. At the same time, broken by the horror of war, he made his life’s journey a quest for salvation, trying to find it within the conformity of marriage and religion. His story is one of a troubled man in a fractured world searching for peace and self acceptance, something which speaks as meaningfully to the modern world as it did then.

The story of American poet Emily Dickinson from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive, unrecognized artist.
Dickinson wrote a poem a day, but only a fraction of her output was published throughout her lifetime. She was extremely shy, but with a wry, lively sense of humour and loved to laugh or to be made to laugh. Her friendships were intense but it was within the family that she found her greatest happiness. Her life is one of quiet dignity, and the poetry magnificent. All the terror and beauty of the world distilled down to the quintessence of meaning and expression.

Synopsis

Set in the early 20th century, 'Sunset Song' begins with the suicide attempt of a poverty stricken woman in Scotland, broken by repeated childbirths, who kills herself and poisons her twin babies. Lily Bart is twenty-nine and very beautiful, but is flawed by her upbringing. She needs a wealthy husband to maintain her precarious foothold in the elite world of the New York of the Belle Epoque. It is a world of vast wealth and moral bankruptcy. In conforming to social expectations, she ignores her chance of happiness with the man she loves.

Her quest for a husband comes to a scandalous end when she is accused of being the mistress of a wealthy married man. The society which once culitvated her now rejects her and she starts to slip down the social ladder. Redeemed by her recognition of the falseness of the life she used to lead, she declines to use her secret weapon to achieve her original goal.

Life for Lily becomes impossible and she moves step by step towards her own inevitable personal tragedy.
