Weighed in - The Story of The Mumper Weighed in - The Story of The Mumper

Director: Sacha Bennett

Year: 2011

It is 1985. Thatcher is in power, Sade is on the radio and the print workers have gone on strike. But nothing will ever put a dampener on a group of close friends that meet every Sunday in their regular South London pub for alcohol and free flowing banter of the highest order. It is at one of these sessions that a man approaches their table and asks the most intriguing question.

Does anyone want to buy a racehorse?

From that simple but surreal question unfolds the story of The Mumper. Set against the backdrop of a changing way of life as Rupert Murdoch moves the printing of his newspapers from the traditions of Fleet Street to the computers of Wapping, this is a tale of seven firm friends, spanning three generations, who embark on a unique journey that eventually leads them to gamble all of their savings and redundancy money on a single race.
