In an unnamed city above the Arctic Circle, in the far north of Russia a narrator, ostensibly the filmmaker, retraces her journey to the city, talking to the images. She tells of her encounters and her recollections of what happened after her visit, between the time of filming and the time of her telling. However, she is aware that the images like her own memories of moving through the city cannot be trusted to provide any certainty about what was happening, what she saw, what she felt and what it meant. This film celebrates Commander Collins’ trailblazing NASA career which opened the way for women to become spacecraft pilots and commanders, and proved a perfect riposte to a previous generation of male astronauts who thought there was no place for women to lead the way in space. ECONOMY OF EXCESS is comprised of footage of the sewage pipes of Essex, shot by a small robot camera that is normally used to locate blockages. The film creates an entrancing movement into the ever-expanding circles of a subterranean parallel universe, which mutates into a hypnotizing voyage of impressionistic colour and light. Humble in its origins yet dazzling in its effects, this video epitomizes the way in which the work continually straddles the line between the sublime and the mundane, turning society’s excess into a spiritual initiation journey.
