I Don't Speak Dog (But I'll Try)

A woman and her German Shepherd dog sit on a bed

Synopsis

A filmmaker unpacks her evolving relationship with her adolescent German Shepherd, confronting the painful question of why, despite raising him, he seems to love her partner more. Blending observational and verité footage with personal narration, this tender story of unrequited love unfolds into an intimate inquiry into the complexities of caregiving and cross-species bonds. Contending with the influence of intergenerational parenting styles on the human–dog relationship and the ways dog’s express agency, the film ultimately asks whether it is possible to love truly without conditions.

Umit Mesut holding a strip of film up to a light, surrounded by shelves packed with film canisters and movie memorabilia. The Last Picture Shop

Director: Liam Saint-Pierre

Year: 2027

THE LAST PICTURE SHOP follows Ümit Mesut, an eccentric 64-year-old Cypriot Cockney projectionist who owns the last cine-film shop in the UK. Against the backdrop of gentrification and the cost-of-living crisis, the shop comes close to closure. Persuaded by his close filmmaker friend Liam, the two embark on an improbable mission: head to Hollywood, track down the high priest of celluloid, Quentin Tarantino, and ask his support to save this wonderful shop before it is lost forever. Little goes to plan, with countless twists and setbacks, their friendship and even their love of cinema is tested, but only through their epic journey do they realise the answer to their quest lies closer to home. The documentary is a heartfelt homage to cinema, filled with humour and humanity.

Extremism is one of the most pressing issues of our time, yet the public's understanding of what causes it and so too how it can be prevented is often far, far away from many of the debates within academic circles. With examples ranging from Sudan, Israel, the US and the UK, to activists from Amnesty International, a pseudonymous journalist and an anonymous expert sits down to discuss 6 metaphorical vignettes from a range of formers, scholars and activists to explore what we've been getting wrong about extremism.
