The US military kicks into action with a huge injection of finance and the USSR is about to lose the cold war.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile on Qangattarsa military base, Rudy Spruance is lost. Dropped off in the middle of no-where in the frozen wastes of the Artic. No one comes.<br /> <br /> The Army doesn't make mistakes. As he comes round in an army hospital that doesn't offically exist, Rudy understands what it is to be on the sharp end of a 'small clerical error'.<br /> <br /> 'You'll want to scratch,' he's told when he comes around.<br /> <br /> 'Don't.' advises the orderly.

Trapped in a twilight world of permanent night shift work they hang out together in the local all night café, where their only escape from the drudgery is observing Vincent's unwavering success in pulling women. There seems little prospect of change. But then events conspire otherwise .
