Keeping Mum Keeping Mum

Director: Niall Johnson

Year: 2006

Every small town has its secrets and Little Wallop is no exception. In a lovely little house, on an idyllic English country lane, live the Goodfellows: Walter, the bumbling town vicar (Rowan Atkinson), Gloria (Kristin Scott Thomas) and their children, Holly and Petey. Gloria tries desperately to keep up appearances, but she knows the whole charade is about to blow to bits: brazen, rebellious Holly has a new boyfriend every week; shy little Petey is the whipping boy for the school bullies; Walter is too busy writing sermons to notice Gloria's fetching new lingerie, or realise that his family is in crisis; and Gloria is so fed up with all of them that she's ready to run off to Mexico with Lance (Patrick Swayze), her rakish American golf instructor. Each night, Gloria prays for salvation or, at the very least, for the neighbour's dog to stop barking.

Enter Grace (Maggie Smith), the answer to Gloria's prayers: a charming, discreet housekeeper with her own unique definition of keeping house - and an unusual knack for problem-solving. Thanks to Grace, Gloria's woes magically begin to evaporate: no more barking dog, no more prying neighbours, no more bullies tormenting her son. But Gloria soon realises everything comes at a price, and there may be more to her capable new housekeeper than meets the eye.
