Dancing at Lughnasa
Director: Pat O'Connor
Year: 1999
The summer of 1936, when the action of Dancing at Lughnasa takes place, is beautiful, but Europe is on the verge of terrible change. Through that glorious summer, at the very edge of Europe, in Ballybeg, Donegal, the Mundy family shelter in their small home - five sisters, one brother and Michael, the love child of Christina, the youngest sister. The film is seen through the eyes of the boy. He feels the joy and security of his close-knit clan, but its secrets and sorrows begin to break through. The arrival of Michael's father, a Welsh man, Gerry Evans, on his way to fight for Franco in Spain, unleashes repressed passion. The Eden of Ballybeg is changed forever. They meet their fate bravely. The memory of that summer haunts Michael forever, memories of love and loss, of women dancing, dancing as if their lives depend on the dance - and they do.
Galicia!
Director: Anna Maguire, Kyle Greenberg
Year: 2026
What if you went on a holiday and the apocalypse happened? GALICIA! is a found-footage, hybrid-documentary following a couple through home video footage as they visit their friends at a winery in rural Spain and inadvertently capture the end of days. We live in a time where the sense of our impending mutually assured destruction is more real than it’s ever been. GALICIA! Takes the form of a holiday video - a document of a couple before - and after the great cataclysm. The film starts as something that feels unedited - an accidental video diary of an ordinary couple that feels somewhat ghostly as much as it is also pedestrian. As the film evolves and degrades, we are led to question the fragility of humanity, as well as its power to endure.
