Shoot On Sight
Synopsis
Commander Ali, born in Pakistan, married to an English woman, and with two teenage kids, is tasked to investigate the police shooting of a suspected Muslim terrorist on the London Underground. Distrusted by both his British superiors in the London police, and his fellow Muslims, he finds his inquiry hampered from all sides. When evidence surfaces pointing to the slain man's innocence, as well as the existence of a terrorist cell operating in his own backyard, Tariq must face the realization that sometimes, the right decision is the hardest one to make. The film is inspired by the terrorists’ attacks of July 7, 2005 on the London underground that resulted in Shoot On Sight order.

Southall, London, 1989. Deepak Ahluwalia wakes up in bed to find himself on fire. He rushes out of the house in flames. When the police arrive, they find Deepak's wife Kiranjit in the garden in a trance-like state with her two young sons. She is arrested after Deepak accuses her of trying to kill him. During her police interview she is in a state of shock but admits starting the fire. She reveals to her soicitor that her husband abused her, but refuses to testify in her own defence. After Deepak dies of his injuries, Kiranjit is convicted of murder, partly because of the false testimony of her mother-in-law that Deepak never hurt her.

In prison, Kiranjit is befriended by her cellmate Ronnie, who later reveals that she too killed her husband after years of abuse. In flashback we see Deepak beating, humiliating and raping Kiranjit. Gradually, Kiranjit reveals her story to her friends. Her case is taken up by the Southall Black Sisters, who campaign against domestic violence, and in particular by Radha, whose passion about the case is rooted in her own sister's suicide after years of abuse by her husband. Radha organises Kiranjit's appeal while Ronnie persuades her brother, an eminent barrister, to take on the case. Kiranjit finds her voice and releases eloquent statements about her experiences; the courts reduce her sentence to manslaughter and she is freed in 1992.
