Shut Your Eyes

Synopsis

Shut Your Eyes, loosely based on the play of the same name, is about a stormy couple in real life who come back together to make a film where, try as they might, they can't avoid falling into their old traps. A naked couple spinning their ritualized vocal and physical dialogue in a loft reserved for their rituals. A black comedy about the animal poetry of seduction and sexuality. About the fantasies the couple makes real or the reality they make into fantasy. About the jagged borderlines between film - fiction and documentary, theater, dance and poetry. Shut Your Eyes was filmed in twelve long-take scenes with one HD camera in Istanbul during Summer 2008.

New Territories (Spectacle is King) New Territories (Spectacle is King)

Director: Rhea Storr

Year: 2025

A summer in the life of a filmmaker weaving her way through six carnivals in England. Observing Caribbean cultural life celebrated-and contested- in public space. We witness multi stage soundsystems, Black Lives Matter floats, histories of violence and peace in the geography of local cities. This film is about how to (and how not to) make an image. The film is inspired by Isaac Julien’s TERRITORIES, made with Sankofa Film and Video Collective in 1984. While Julien catalogues the antagonistic relationship between Black community and the police at Notting Hill Carnival, NEW TERRITORIES considers the role of spectatorship turned consumerism in laying the ground in which Black and Caribbean identities are defined. Ka Ba Ddi: a breath, a move, a game Ka Ba Ddi: a breath, a move, a game

Director: Alia Syed

Year: 2025

In this South Asian team sport, players repeating ‘kabaddi’ frantically cross boundaries on the court, tagging their opponents before returning. Ka ba Ddi is a high-energy team sport originating in South Asia played between two teams of seven players on a divided court. Players respond to boundaries, bodies think in relation to each other: lines of the court, focal points for players movements. Stretching back into their own territory; a vocabulary of movement that make connections with what is happening in the wider world, in domestic UK politics but also internationally. Territory has never felt so terrifying or so contested. The rules based order of Kabaddi stipulates that one team sends a single "raider" into the opposing team's territory, the aim is to tag/touch as many players as possible from the opposing side before retreating back into your own territory. Rules govern our bodies, we live in a series of ever increasing courts both materially and ideologically. Official Selection BFI London Film Festival 2025 - Short Film Competition
