The Dream That Jack Built

Synopsis

Jack is on his slow descent into psychosis after being physiologically worn down by the mysterious Entity. The Entity is a culmination of all Jack's dark desires and wants that have built up throughout his life however it is a separate being in itself. Jack has no power in life and eventually gives in to his weaknesses. Depravity, impurity. Jack caves in and enters the dream world offered by The Entity as his personal plane of existence where he is Lord and master. It may have been a beautiful place if it were not twisted by the growing taint within Jack. It is a nightmarish realm of turmoil, suffering and perverted excess. However Jack does not have long to enjoy his new home or explore the powers offered, Jack thinks he has mastered the being known as The Entity but it is all a illusion. While Jack sips on luxurious whiskeys and foods The Entity has breached into the real world and stands over Jack ready to consume his life energies and move on to his next victim.

In present-day Taipei, Tao develops unexplainable affectionate feelings for Shin, an indifferent guy. Desperate to create lasting memories, she sends people to beat him up, using pain as a twisted form of connection. Meanwhile, Melih, having left Istanbul for Taipei, owns a noodle shop. One night, he receives an unexpected flower from the perpetually drunk Ping. Melih begins to stare into the flower from time to time, experiencing the tale of Tao and Shin and revealing his own unspoken desire and failed attempts to connect with Ping. As Melih digs deeper into the tale, he confronts his struggles to form meaningful relationships. His struggle gradually mirrors Tao’s struggle with Shin. As Tao grows closer to Shin, Shin vanishes, leaving Tao to realize that these recollections, retained only by her, might be mere figments of imagination. Tao’s tale then makes Melih question if it’s better to forget everything, as he contemplates whether letting go of solitary memories might finally bring him peace. Through abstract choreography, symbolic imagery and an atmospheric score, the work reflects the planet’s vulnerability, the challenges posed by environmental shifts and the transformative potential of collective effort. As the dancers navigate these ever-changing locations, their movements evoke the escalating consequences of a warming world, capturing both its fragility and the urgent call for action.
