Synopsis

Vienna, 1803. At the opening of our story there exists two separate worlds in 19th century Europe - the world of freed slaves who settle across Europe, and the world of the landed gentry - each containing a small group of characters upon whom we focus our audiences' interest.

These two worlds come into contact with each other through the person of the violinist, George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower. Our drama consists in the collision of these two worlds as represented by the composer, Ludwig van Beethoven and Bridgetower. This is the story of their brief friendship.

Jerry Downing is an aspiring novelist who has an ego problem that is turning him into a monster in his household. He is an unformed, incomplete human being that has flaws in his personality. His ordinary world is one where he signs on the dole, checks-in for agency work and watches television over meals. One of his flatmates, Julia Wells, sees his problem and encourages him to give up his novel writing and find a full-time job where he will meet his other half. He refuses the call to adventure because he has been sacked from previous jobs because as a result of writing his novel during working hours. His other flatmate, Kerry Cerberus, invites him to go salsa dancing with her. He declines the offer, suddenly aware of her feelings for him.

Whilst searching for work, Jerry comes across his father who is also unemployed and off to sign on the dole. This highlights the inadequate role models and male figures in his life that have groomed him towards unemployment. He realises that he has to battle against his own nature in order to rise above his situation. He determines in his mind that he will find a job.

Ricardo Beldini is hopelessly lost in London and becomes the victim of a mugging. He is taken into the home of Angola Niger, an elderly woman, who ministers to him by offering him a cup of tea. But there is something strange about this woman that he can’t quite put his finger on. Eventually, he slips off into unconsciousness. When he awakes, he finds himself lying in a strange bed. He borders on the edge of consciousness, and his feet are terribly sore. The sound of bubbling water slaps against his face. He ponders for a while, taking in this strange environment. He painfully tries to get out of bed, but freezes in alarm as he sees his trainers by the wall with his feet still in them cut off just above the ankles. Angola marches towards him with a chopping knife ready to serve him up for dinner.
