Synopsis

This piece exposes the parallels of computer coding and genetic coding in humans and animals. Voiced by an anonymous group of ‘hybrid’ machines, from some point in the near future, these ‘narrators’ look at these creatures as inefficient machines and consider ways of editing and improving their code.
The film draws upon the research and tools used by Dr Darren Logan in his investigation of genetically influenced behaviour.

Synopsis

Jennifer left Gibraltar and entered an enclosed community of Discalced Carmelites nearly 30 years ago. The cloistered community live out an ideal of work and prayer as a creative life. The quotes are from Teresa of Avila’s “Way of Perfection” the spiritual guide she wrote for her Carmelite nuns.

Seven years in the making, the project was realised through the collaboration between inside and outside the convent walls. Filmed inside the convent by Jennifer and Alejandro Roman a volunteer who for some years helps out the community and is the only person allowed inside.

The film gives us rare access to the monastery and her enclosed life within it.

An installation piece which is a return to, and a modern elaboration upon, Vincent Van Gogh’s Provence landscapes.
A series of digital paintings interrogate and reframe concepts of representation and perception through image manipulation and augmented reality. Using bucolic and contemplative images, juxtaposed with raw data visualization, the project suggests alternate modes of visual synthesis.

Made by deliberately misusing a language translator app on a smartphone, Steve Hates Fish interprets the signage and architecture in a busy London shopping street. In an environment overloaded with information the signs run riot, as the confused and restless software does its best to fulfil its task.

A vague narrative is created to follow the structure of original Tarot card, Major Arcana, such as The Fool’s Journey, throughout the following 21 scenes.
This piece was made after the creation of a series of tactile 22 collage works that were heavily inspired by Derbyshire’s history, myths and legend. This collage itself also forms a new Tarot, loaded with symbolism, intrigue and mystical imagery.

In 'Akula Dream' a Russian Akula submarine gets a new captain. However, the new captain is much more into Shamanic drumming, journeying, seances, and mind experiments than he is in nuclear deterrent. Not surprisingly, there is some tension aboard.
In form, the film straddles two registers; narrative film making and video art. It uses advanced CGI and has unusual dream sequences as members of the boat travel outside the hull.

Synopsis

"'Black Code/Code Noir' unites temporally and geographically disparate elements into a critical reflection on two recent events: the murders of Michael Brown and Kajieme Powell by police officers in the U.S. in 2014. Archaeologically, the film argues that behind this present situation is a sedimented history of slavery, preserved by the Black Code laws of the colonies in the Americas. These codes have transformed into the algorithms that configure police Big Data and the necropolitical control of African Americans today. Yet how can we read in this present? How can we unwrite the sorcery of this code as a hack? Through a historical détournement the film suggests the Haitian Revolution as the first instance of the Black Code’s hacking and as a past symbol for a future hope." Louis Henderson
