Synopsis

Set in Egypt, Greece, Italy and the US, Anja Kirschner's piece reflects on the way psychological, historical and material realities are connected through the prism of the filmmaking progress itself. Its main protagonists - a director and a screenwriter are in the early stages of developing a commercial feature film, but soon their own conflicting desires and the events simultaneously occurring around them, take them far beyond their initial intentions. Forced to radically reconfigure her project, the director becomes more and more drawn into conversations with the actors she has cast, which centre on the way cinema intersects with their own lives and gives expression to the realities they are confronted with. Daniel Fawcett's SPLENDOR SOLIS is a twin screen cine-poem that has been compiled from footage filmed over 17 years. It features everything from home movies, unfinished films, video diaries, video experiments, filmed performances and behind the scenes footage. This loosely chronological cinematic wandering charts a journey in which filmmaking is used as a tool for personal exploration of inner and outer worlds, where cinema becomes an arena for rituals of self-discovery, healing and transformation.
