When the ship is struck and sunk by a loch monster, Aldric and slave girl Hretha determine to have their revenge on Aeric. To complicate matters, double-dealing Tudwal, the betrayer of Fingal, in exchange for the chance to marry Roderich's daughter Melangall, also sets off to find Aeric and kill him. Roderich, meanwhile, left behind to negotiate his marriage terms, finds himself agreeing that once married to Langoreth and proclaimed king, she will set off to Rome for good with her monk Oran, and be supported by Roderich for the rest of her life. Finally, Roderich's retainer, Dyfnwal, the gentle giant who Melangall loves, realises that unless he does something to straighten matters out, the country will sink further into ruin.

Synopsis

In the late 1980s, a sleepy military post on the Macedonian-Albanian border is continuing with its work. Their routine is interrupted when Lieutenant Pasic feels strange pains in his nether parts. He seeks help from the only doctor among the soldiers, Sinisa. The doctor conducts the necessary embarrassing examination and diagnoses syphilis. Pasic has a problem: he cannot go home to his wife now. So he invents a war. He declares a state of emergency and informs the soldiers that the Albanians have moved their troops close to the border and are preparing to attack. Pasic orders that no one, including himself, can leave the base. But not everyone believes the story. Another young soldier, the streetwise Ljuba Karanovic, is suspicious. Having never liked Pasic, Ljuba comes up with his own scheme to get himself off the base and make a fool out of Pasic at the same time.
