Daniel Fawcett's SPLENDOR SOLIS is a twin screen cine-poem that has been compiled from footage filmed over 17 years. It features everything from home movies, unfinished films, video diaries, video experiments, filmed performances and behind the scenes footage.

This loosely chronological cinematic wandering charts a journey in which filmmaking is used as a tool for personal exploration of inner and outer worlds, where cinema becomes an arena for rituals of self-discovery, healing and transformation. SPLENDOR SOLIS is a personal celebration of cinema, creativity, play, collaboration, friendship and all the splendours under the sun.

'The Sky Trembles and the Earth is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers' [the complete title of this piece] is partially inspired by Paul Bowles’ story 'A Distant Episode', and charts a mysterious transformation from observational making-of to inventive adaptation, shot against a staggering Moroccan landscape.

From the future, a memory in the form of a poem evokes a happy childhood before a turbulent war. This memory comes in the shape of a space trip that links the present (words) and the past (still photos) through the war (moving image), creating an audiovisual experience that binds the viewer to a mysterious place where adulthood (consciousness), adolescence (cinema) and childhood (photo and music) live together in a permanent tension.

The Pagoda in London’s Kew Gardens is rarely open to the public. It was open for a short time last year and I took the opportunity to climb all 253 wooden steps having first done so 60 years before.
