Synopsis:

The Secret Life of Balloons explores the parallel journeys of a boy and his girlfriend at very different stages of existence. Left lost and believing they’ll never connect again, this uplifting short film asks questions about the boundaries of love, life and letting go.

This is the first short film undertaken by sisters Lauren (age 18) and Nina (age 16) Graham. Inspired by the Australian Theatre for Young People's Fresh Ink playwriting development programme, which collects the best new monologues together to be performed as The Voices Project.

Nina wrote the original monologue as a dramatic piece of creative writing for a school assessment on the topic of love and loss. The sisters then adapted the piece into a short film project that was undertaken during the School holidays as they waited for external exam results. Together they managing to raise and utilise a small budget recruit a great team of friends to help shoot, compose music, edit and perform the work. The end result has been an exciting journey and taken them in a very different direction from the original work. The finished work has both surprised and delighted them from an initial idea of loss and despair they have managed to capture an uplifting film of loss and love.

Presented on paper, the concrete poem "Full Stop" (taken from Zata's poetry collection "Doppelgängers", 2005) takes the shape of a circular full stop. In this transcreation, the material is presented aurally as Morse Code, and visually as a moving telegram. This artwork was funded by Arts Council England.

Jill Daniels’ autobiographical film explores the secrets of her emotionally repressed Jewish parents Barbara and Bertie, who were married in the mid 1940s when homosexuality was illegal and divorce in the eyes of observant Jews, a sin. During the course of their long lives Barbara and Bertie moved from house to house, country to country, through divorce, remarriage and physical violence. Moving from house to house, country to country, through divorce, remarriage and physical violence rich one day and broke the next Barbara and Bertie spend their last days together in a small flat in suburban London. Daniels films her parents in their small flat while dramatically charged re-enactments hint at a hidden narrative of physical violence and sexual ambivalence. Daniels fails to confront her parents’ about their secrets and it is only through the privacy of the filmmaker's voice that she can dispute the authenticity of their recounted memories.
