Synopsis

50-year old Sharkey travels to Bosnia with a false identity and under the disguise of a UNICEF envoy. In fact, he is engaged in the illicit trade of smuggling children into Western Europe. Sharkey has been sent to Vitosice by a Polish lawyer in order to pick up a small boy. But his contact in Vitosice has been murdered and the boy he was sent to collect is not there. Sharkey runs into an army patrol. The Colonel in charge forces Sharkey to take his daughter out of Bosnia to her family in Germany. A gang of youths blows up their jeep with a landmine which kills the Colonel's daughter. Sharkey and the Colonel survive. Shortly after the incident, Sharkey stumbles on the gang of youths, beats their leader in a game of cards and wins a child. Next morning the 10-year old Vlado and Sharkey set off to Poland. In an old vehicle they travel through war-torn Bosnia, not knowing that the Colonel, who wrongly blames his daughter's death on Sharkey, is close behind them. On their way out of Bosnia, Sharkey and Vlado gradually develop a friendship.

The story seeks to give some semblance of truth about the initial arrival of Europeans in Africa, which eventually leads to slavery and colonisation. In the advent colonisation in Africa, one woman, Yaa Asantewa, refuses to hand over her land for British rule. She leads a tiny army to wage war against the British. This country was the centre of the slave trade and also had the largest reserve of gold at that time. The story unfolds in late 1471 when the Portuguese arrived on the West African coast in search of gold to mint coin currencies in Europe. Before their arrival, the Arabs were the main traders who also indulged in human trafficking. This factual documentary looks at the part various African tribes and Europeans play in slavery and its consequential effect. When slavery was abolished, colonisation also took over culminating into the scramble for Africa.

In 1984 the National Union of Mineworkers went on strike. The dispute lasted for over a year and was the most bitterly fought since the general strike of 1926, marking a turning point in the struggle between the government and the trade union movement. The Orgreave coking plant was the site of one of the miners' strike's most violent confrontations with the police. It began in a field near the plant and culminated in a cavalry charge through the village of Orgreave. Artist Jeremy Deller’s work 'The Battle of Orgreave', staged seventeen years later, was a spectacular re-enactment of what happened on that day. It was orchestrated by Howard Giles, a historical re-enactment expert and the former director of English Heritage’s event programme. More than 800 people participated in the re-enactment, many of them former miners, and a few former policemen, reliving the events from 1984 that they themselves took part in. Other participants were drawn from battle re-enactment societies across England. Jeremy Deller's reenactment of the 1984 clash between striking miners and police at Orgreave in South Yorkshire on 17 June 2001 was filmed by Mike Figgis for Artangel Media.

'G.M.' was inspired by the work of magician and film pioneer Georges Melies (1861-1938), whose most famous film - 'Le Voyage Dans La Lune' - was exactly one hundred years old in 2001.
