Synopsis

A drugs-dealer double-crosses and kills a drugs trafficker in the remote West Coast of Scotland. The dealer gets arrested and finds out he was seen by a couple of local people. Sitting on remand facing life imprisonment, with only two unnamed witnesses from the one street hamlet of Bartoun standing between him and freedom he decides to hire a hitman to kill all the potential witnesses. Outside a rural police station the hitman starts a stopwatch, jumps into his car and sets off down the road. He drives at full speed through the barren country roads until he pulls up in Bartoun. He jumps out of the car and stops the stopwatch. It reads 28 minutes 36 seconds. At noon the next day the hitman strides down Main Street, pulls out two handguns and starts shooting. Once his intial attack is over he starts his stopwatch, sets 28 minutes 36 seconds, counting down. This is how much time he has to kill everyone in the village before the police can possibly get there. Pandemonium follows within the village as he methodically hunts down his targets and people frantically try to stay alive.

Synopsis

Based on a true story, Sergeant Peter King (Kenneth Cranham) of the Army Dental Corps, too old to fight, and Private Leslie Cuthbertson (Leo Bill), a trainee dental mechanic in the Corps, are thrown together by their passionate desire to see active service. Armed with just two revolvers and a dozen grenades, King persuades Cuthbertson to join him on a mission to occupied France. In a letter to Winston Churchill, King explains their intention to invade France and fight the Germans. After a number of failed attempts, they finally arrive by boat and stumble across a German radar station. They succeed in blowing up what they believe to be the main Operations Room, but are soon forced to make their escape as the entire compound unexpectedly erupts with gunfire and explosions. After narrow escapes from the Germans and a stray mine in the Channel, the two men are picked up at sea and interrogated as spies. Identified as deserters, they are returned to their barracks to be court martialled. At the eleventh hour King and Cuthbertson are saved by the arrival of Major Merton (Derek Jacobi), Churchill's Chief Intelligence Advisor. Their letter has been received in Whitehall and Merton corroborates their heroic story. Exonerated of lying, King and Cuthbertson are nevertheless reprimanded by the Court for their behaviour, but receive an invitation to tea with the Prime Minister should they ever be in Whitehall.

Set in South Yorkshire, An Angel for May tells the tale of schoolboy Tom who is transported from the present to the time of the Second World War. In the present day Tom's mother Barbara is separated from Tom's father and wants to marry Bob Harris. Tom is not happy with his mother's plans for re-marriage. In Tom's present day world are his next door neighbour and an old beggar woman Rosie. Stories in both time frames are intricately told and interwoven.

Brian and Julie, a young married couple, are about to have their first child. But far from bringing them happiness, following the birth, Julie descends into a psychotic form of postnatal disorder known as Puerperal Psychosis, an illness which affects 1 in 500 women. Her behaviour becomes increasingly bizarre and she is admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. Her strange behaviour continues and she forms an attachment to a male fellow inmate. After several weeks in the hospital and several sessions of electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), Julie is no better and Brian despairs of ever getting her back. He starts to blame God for his situation and to question his beliefs and the principles of his faith. Sarah, his work colleague tries to help but her motives are not entirely unselfish and Brian has to fight against his attraction to her. When he eventually succumbs, he is filled with remorse, especially when he discovers that Julie has returned to sanity. He decides to take action to get his life back to some sort of normality but when he goes to get Julie out of the hospital and take her home he is faced with another problem - believing she is cured but that nobody believes her, she has run away from the hospital and disappeared.
