My mum, she always said to me, 'Anything you do, my son, always leave it neat and tidy' and, do you know, it's a bit of advice I've always followed. And by an odd twist of fate, the line of work I landed up in made that advice all the more appropiate. But I must confess, as I get a little older it gets a little harder, leaving everything - neat and tidy.

Synopsis

Gilly steps out of prison with nothing and no one except J, a small time hustler who owes him money. They go back a long way and that means something. All Gilly wants is to start over, but J has gone and invested his money in some half baked gun deal behind his boss's back and needs Gilly's help. So Gilly goes along with him, as he always has done. As they get deeper into London's underworld, it's clear that J's drug habit is spiralling out of control and his ruthless boss Max is already one step ahead of him. J's wife Marie wants out, but he has stopped listening and their world is falling apart. Then Max finds out about J's dealings and demands he betray Gilly, setting him up so he has no choice. Desperate, his back against the wall, J takes action the only way he knows how. But when all hell breaks loose, it is Gilly who has been playing a knife edged game all along.

Oliver Parker's imaginative adaptation combines Wilde's inimitable wit with an engaging romantic tale and a sparkling comedy of social manners.

The Magdalene Asylums in Ireland were run by the Sisters of Mercy on behalf of the Catholic Church. Young girls were sent there by families or orphanages and once there, were imprisoned and sent to work in the laundries where they could atone for their sins. Their sins varied from being unmarried mothers to being too pretty, too ugly, simple minded, too clever or being a victim of rape and talking about it. And for their sins they worked 364 days a year unpaid, they were half starved, beaten, humiliated, raped, their children forcibly removed from them. Their sentence was indefinite. Thousands of women lived and died there. The last Magdalene Asylum in Ireland closed in 1996, five years ago. This film is from the point of view of four of these young women in the 1960s, an era mistakenly seen by some as a time of unchallenged female liberation. These young Catholic women find themselves in an almost medieval nightmare whilst the outside world tacitly (or in some cases actively) supports a theocratic state. It looks at how their personalities develop for better and for worse in an environment controlled and dominated by celibate women, servants of God, Brides of Christ. In their own ways the girls refuse to be beaten, but what victory is there if they remain imprisoned as little more than slaves? One gets out in a heartbreakingly banal fashion, one is imprisoned in a mental asylum, two finally rebel, run away, escape. It is a fictional film that unfortunately happens to be true.

To End All Wars is the true story of Ernest Gordon, a young Scottish student teacher who signs up with The Argyll and Sutherland Highland regiment at the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1942, during the fall of Singapore, the regiment is captured by the Japanese and taken to a prisoner of war camp in Thailand. Despite the threat of execution, the regiment's proud Colonel James MacLean and his loyal Major Ian Campbell are committed to escape and defiant in the face of their implacable captors. Established prisoners, including Dusty Miller advise compliance in line with the Japanese code of Bashido, which demands dedication to the Emperor. Also held in the camp is American Lieutenant Tom Reardon, an opportunist who believes self-interest is the only reliable method of survival. MacLean and Campbell are ordered to meet with Lieutenant Colonel Nagatomo and Captain Noguchi and learn that they have 18 months to build 420 kilometres of railroad into the jungle. When MacLean protests and robustly refuses to sign documents pledging they will not escape, he is executed. Work on the 'railroad of death' begins in appalling conditions. Famine, fear and disease sweep through the men as they buckle under the strain.

'G.M.' was inspired by the work of magician and film pioneer Georges Melies (1861-1938), whose most famous film - 'Le Voyage Dans La Lune' - was exactly one hundred years old in 2001.
