Synopsis

Two elderly brothers live together on a small farm in Forest Coal Pit. This super 8mm portrait explores the mundanity, vibrancy and intimacy of their relationship and hyperlocal world. As they feed their livestock, tend to their garden, the brothers discuss elephants in China, lobster fisherman, ghosts and each other.

You know, I’ve got to the age where I want to settle down and stop jumping from relationship to relationship every few weeks, but everyone I meet is so immature which I thought wouldn’t be the case now. Know what I mean? What do you do for a job? Ah no way! I love animation! That’s so interesting! Anything I’ve seen? I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be an animator! Bet it’s so fun. I think Pixar is my favourite, that film with the cars is just so damn funny! And Shrek! I almost forget that’s animation, just amazing how people come up with this stuff and make those characters so believable! Is that the sort of stuff you do? Can I see?

Told entirely in drawings made over nearly thirty years by British artist/filmmaker Penny Andrea, LOCKS AND KEYS, WATER, TREES portrays the genesis of a rare brain tumor with its origins in early childhood. Diagnosed and treated in the artist's late twenties, the film reflects an ongoing process of recovery from traumatic brain injury. Portraying drawing as both escape and embrace, a 'shuttle between inner and outer worlds', and video as its counterpart medium in time, the film speaks to the communicative power of art to connect, explore and heal trauma.

Synopsis

This humorous and melancholic portrait of a male voice choir in North East Wales begins with the filmmaker’s father, Ed, a 90-year-old widower, selling the family home and making early arrangements for his own funeral. Weekly practice is his last remaining solace, but with an average age of 74, his beloved choir is facing a crisis of its own. They must act fast or face extinction, and the hunt begins to find “brown haired men” in their 40s and 50s to keep the choir going. As their search intensifies, the group grows closer. Ed finds new meaning in his life, while Merf deals with his own bad news by focusing on the choir’s revival, and Gwyn laughs in the face of a prostate cancer diagnosis, walking the wing of a plane to raise money for charity. Eventually, they travel to Northern Ireland to perform for the first time in two decades.
