Synopsis

THE ARRIVAL charts the reunion of long-lost brothers Raheem and Tom after the older of the two brothers, Tom, was given up for adoption at birth. The film examines the exhilarating and uncanny experience of meeting a blood brother for the first time in adulthood. As the brothers grow closer, excited to make up for the years spent apart, they must confront the uncomfortable truths at the heart of their family. The film is a gut-wrenching, emotional drama in the vein of titles like PAST LIVES, AFTERSUN, and ALL OF US STRANGERS.

Set on a converted Thames barge on an Essex estuary, an older and wealthy, dying woman, Valerie, has to say goodbye to her long-term, much younger, male companion, Dan. He is a musician and is going to work in Japan. They will never meet again. Valerie has asked her friend of a similar age, Maggie, to come and take over her care and then accompany her back home for her final days. Dan struggles to leave. The arrival of Maggie, who has never hidden her disapproval of this relationship, brings up old tensions and only makes things worse.  The film, essentially a love story takes place over one night starting at dusk and ending at dawn, incorporating Valerie's dreams and reveries, as the three of them struggle to overcome their fears.
