Set on a converted Thames barge on an Essex estuary, an older and wealthy, dying woman, Valerie, has to say goodbye to her long-term - much younger - male companion, Dan. He is a musician and is going to work in Japan. They will never meet again. Valerie has asked her friend of a similar age, Maggie, to come and take over of her care and then accompany her home for her final days. Dan struggles to leave and the presence of Maggie brings up old tensions about his companionship and motives with Valerie.
