Project Detail

One Man in the Band

Synopsis

One-man band conjures up images of tuneless street entertainers with drums on their backs and cymbals on their knees, whereas contemporary one-man bands are diverse and vibrant in their musical output. They are more than just solo performers: a one-man band brings to the stage noise and spectacle worthy of a whole band. However, unmediated by creative collaboration, the result can have a peculiar intensity verging on the downright eccentric.

This feature documentary follows a selection of contemporary one-man and one-lady bands from Europe and the USA. Their musical output often defies categorisation, ranging from theremin rock to hurricane drum solos and a backing band made of bicycle wheels. Rather than mocking the musical excesses on display, the documentary takes an intimate approach - helped by the fact that it's a film about one-man bands made by a one-man band filmmaker. As it becomes clear that life on the road for a one-man band is a journey into solitude, so the documentary asks the question: what drives us as humans to create, and is it worth the pain.

Killa Bee Killa Bee

Director: Kenton Oxley

Year: 2027

Inspired by the true story of Bryony Tyrell, known in the cage as “Killa Bee” - one of Britain’s most unexpected fighters: a nurse on the frontlines during COVID, devoted mother, and a pro MMA fighter. Featured in stories by The Telegraph, The Mirror, The Daily Star, and more, Bryony has captured hearts and media attention with her extraordinary double life... Bry leads a double life — a nurse by day and a ferocious mixed martial arts fighter by night. Driven to the brink as she prepares for a showdown with Molly McCann, she risks it all — family, sanity, everything — for her shot at glory. Just as that chance arrives, the pandemic strikes, pushing her into the trenches of the COVID ICU. When tragedy hits close to home, her world is shaken. But Bry doesn’t back down. Another fight offer reignites her hunger — though this time, her career and home life are both on the ropes. The final match? It’s brutal, raw, and unforgettable. Spotting her family in the stands, Bry makes a soul-shaking decision — choosing the battle that truly matters most. This electrifying film melds high-octane MMA action, heart-stopping drama, and an unbreakable spirit.

Director: Benjamin Verrall

Year: 2026

Maya, a sculptor, agrees to create a portrait of her estranged father, David, a once-celebrated writer now coming to terms with a terminal diagnosis. As she builds his likeness in clay, Maya is forced back to the question that has shadowed her life: what led to her mother’s suicide, and what part David played in it. Outside the studio, Maya navigates the tension the reunion creates in her relationships with her partner, Della, and her sister, Jade. In the final scenes, Maya is left alone in the studio with the almost-finished sculpture, trying to complete the father she has only just begun to understand.
