Ireland, at the end of the 19th century, a time of political unrest:





Agnes MacDonell owns a large estate on the remote island of Achill. A tough, determined English woman, she meets her match in the mysterious James Lynchehaun, 'fine, dark, animal looking', who persuades her against her better instincts to employ him as her land agent.





Despite their class and age difference - she is in her early forties, he is in his early thirties - Agnes finds herself powerfully drawn to the determined Lynchehaun and they have a passionate, if dangerous affair.





But almost immediately Agnes becomes scared as the man's evil streak starts to show itself, and - in a climactic scene of deranged violence and emotion - he nearly destroys her.





Brian Lynch's powerfully and beautifully paced screenplay draws us into a world of almost Victorian melodrama and the desperate, at times comic struggle for power and domination between an emancipated woman and a persuasive, but destructive man.





The film stars Greta Scacchi, Daniel Craig ('Elizabeth, Love is the Devil'), Stephen Dillane (Welcome to Sarajevo), Valerie Edmond ('The Crow Road' 1997 BAFTA Nomination) and Donal Donnelly ('The Dead').

Synopsis

Glasgow, Scotland, May bank holiday Friday. After closing a big deal, young London businessman Charlie Grant puts his credit cards, and his briefcase in the trunk of his car. In celebration he gets wildly drunk. In the morning, he wakes up on a girl's sofa, then discovers that his car has been towed away to the city pound.





At the pound, now cashless, Charlie pleads to get his credit cards from the car. He is refused and the shutter comes down until the bank holiday is over. Angry, he calls Caroline, his wealthy fiancee in London. As she answers, he is mugged in the street by two addicts who steal his cellphone. Charlie tries to panhandle fifty pence to call Caroline again, but a street girl, Gina accuses him of stealing her pitch. They argue. Gina, seeing he is hurt, finally takes pity on him and lets him use her phone card. He reaches Caroline's answer phone. Gina seeing that Charlie is hungry takes him to the soup kitchen. She gets him a coat and a sleeping bag to get through the weekend. Charlie is ungrateful. Gina departs to rescue her street friend Lucy from corrupt cop Paterson who later singles Charlie out as a dealer. Fortunately Charlie meets street-wise Willie-Boy who gets him into a homeless hostel for the night.





Next day, Charlie re-meets Gina who wants to take him to Loch Lomond, but Gina and Lucy get arrested by the corrupt Cops for soliciting. Charlie convinces the duty sergeant to release them. Facing another night sleeping out, Gina takes Charlie back to her 'skipper'. That night, Charlie, Gina and some of their homeless friends are maliciously burnt out of their 'skipper' by Paterson . . .

In 1939 the King of Navarre and his three best friends swear an oath to give up women for three years whilst devoting themselves to the study of philosophy. One of the terms of their pledge specifically prohibits women from their presence, but the arrival of the Princess of France and her three beautiful attendants on a diplomatic visit, throws the plan into disarray.


In secret the King and each of his friends pursue the girls and the entire court become intoxicated by love.


The mood is broken by the news of the death of the Princess's father and the girls return to France. France has fallen to the Nazis.


Before they leave, the heartbroken men must prove that their love is not just an infatuation and remain faithful to them. And as proof of their devotion the loving couples are happily reunited at the end of the war.
