While investigating her late parents’ involvement with the Anglo Iranian Oil Company (BP), the filmmaker comes across the letters of a petroleum geologist in Iran in the 1930s who was later to embark on a search for the origins of civilisation. 'The Host' sets out on its own exploration, to decipher signs from the fragmented images buried in the BP (British Petroleum) Archive. This journey through the past interweaves a number of stories drawn from both personal memory and the records of an imperial history, which builds a picture of a 20th-century colonial encounter. 'The Host' is a personal essay film about the stories we tell about ourselves and others, the facts and fictions we live by, and their consequences. (LFF brochure)

Six actors punch, kick and wrestle their way through the Wild West of an East London drinking establishment.

The ritual of the Western bar-brawl is relocated in a London working men's club.

The formal approach (to choreography, framing and editing) ensures that the viewer is made aware of the choreographed nature of the violence. This violence appears to have no consequences, the actors' bodies being as rubbery and invulnerable as those in the television Westerns that inspired it.

People dance in private moments of personal abandon, in living-rooms across London during the summer of 2001. By turns comic and moving, the film is the result of the director's work with respondents to an advertisement seeking 'living-room dancers' - people who like to dance behind closed doors.

The rhythms and patterns of military drill create a dance for the camera. Set against the horizon of Salisbury Plain, a regiment of soldiers repeat their curious ritual in a bleak and timeless natural world. They are met by a military band who emerge from the landscape, performing a unique, a sparkling spectacle, witnessed only by the trees and the bird-life.
