Synopsis

Wasters is a small self contained film in the same mould of CLeRkS. Written and directed by Luke Rufo.

It is one slow wednesday night for our four slackers who work in a bar. They would all rather be elsewhere doing other things instead of pouring drinks for others to have good times. This is a story about friendship, betrayal, love and oh yeah talking about shagging, drinking and everything in between.

This film is the first to document the life and work of the Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist, William McLaren. From humble beginnings in the 1920s in Cardenden, a mining town in Fife, McLaren went on to produce work in some of the finest houses in the UK.

His illustrations appeared regularly in the 1950s and 1960s in the BBC's Radio Times. He became a prolific book illustrator and designer of dust jackets for over 150 books.

In 1966 a commission to create a series of paintings for Hopetoun House near Edinburgh was the breakthrough for McLaren, leading to decorative commissions in private houses and public buildings where he developed his trompe l'oeil style.

The filmmakers have traced hundreds of works by McLaren and many of these are included in this documentary, together with testimony from those who knew him. He died in 1987, aged 64, leaving behind a range of work that will surprise and delight many people.

Wandering from a dead house party and out through the wilderness, a woman witnesses a man setting fire to clothes on a secluded bridge. Intrigued, she follows him into the night, watching as he engages in more acts of destruction. Drawn closer towards the man and his increasingly bizarre behavior, the woman chooses to intervene.

Synopsis

In a bare room, a doberman sleeps on the floor, tied to a rusty metal block. On the other side of the room is a woman. She is barely clothed and lying on an old bed, tied up. It is clear that she has been there for a long time. The bed is covered in stains, the woman’s wrists and ankles are raw from struggling against the ties, and her face is stained with tears. The room's two windows are blacked out with bin bags and the only sound that can be heard is the monotonous hum of an air vent.
When she surprisingly manages to free one of her hands, the dog begins an incessant angry barking. The woman hurries to free herself from the complex knots but it is difficult for her to concentrate as the doberman is pulling on his own rope, lunging at her.

All the noise alerts her mysterious captor and he heads for the room. The woman manages to free herself and she tears at a window, ripping open a binbag. Under the bag, she discovers a metal meshing stopping her from getting to the window itself. Footsteps approach. Can she make it?
