Synopsis

Marion and her ten year old son, Stuart, look after an old National Trust property while it is closed over winter. Stuart and his mother return from a visit to a psychiatrist who is intrigued by Stuart, as he draws his nightmares on scraps of paper that he then collects in jars. One night, a precious jar is broken and the nightmare within escapes into the large old house, where it stalks mother and son.

Young Anna Holz, a student at the Vienna Music Conservatory is summoned to the offices of Herr Schlemmer, Beethoven’s publisher. His Ninth Symphony is about to be premiered and Schlemmer, who is dying of cancer, needs a copyist to complete the score. Anna eagerly accepts, despite his warning that Beethoven is a monster. As her work of copying down the music of Beethoven proceeds, Anna is drawn into the maestro’s tortured and inspired world. She sees their collaboration as a God-sent opportunity to prove her own talent as a composer; he glimpses in her a pure soul who might help him realize the culmination of his art – the creation of the last string quartets, the most sublime and spiritual music ever written. Beethoven reveals his growing need and affection for Anna as they work together on the string quartets.  She boldly shows Beethoven her own work. Thoughtlessly, he derides it and she leaves him in despair. Desperate, Anna accepts her longtime paramour, Martin’s, proposal of marriage. Beethoven storms after her - she must choose between Martin and him. Anna tries to flee Vienna but cannot; her destiny is linked to Beethoven’s. She returns to finish their work and finds him dying. From his dictation she copies the last of the quartets. His work on earth done, he frees her to become what he tells her she was born to be – a composer.

Daddy's Girl is a chilling psychological horror feature. Heavily influenced by cult Japanese horror, the film uses striking imagery to tell this dark, haunting story. Stephen (Richard Harrington) is a psychiatrist struggling to hold his life together. Enduring perpetual grief over the violent death of his beautiful wife, his life is fraught with pain and tragedy. Surviving only through his copious intake of prescribed drugs, Stephen is anxious to return to work. When a close colleague at the hospital takes pity on him and reinstates him as Duty Psychologist, Stephen is soon confronted with a troubled teenage girl called Nina (Jamie Winstone). With an obsession for cutting herself and a seemingly increasing blood-lust, Nina displays sinister behaviour which begins to push the boundaries of teenage angst. Are her actions merely a symptom of an unhappy home life or are they rooted in a much more sinister cause? Set in bleak and ominous locations, Daddy's Girl will drag you through seduction, manipulation, wilful betrayal and a haunting that refuses to desist. Daddy's Girl exploits the increasingly blurred distinction between psychosis and reality. It explores the fragile relationships between people and the explosive metamorphoses that comes with adolescence. It is a film that asks questions that you do not always want to know the answers to.
