Using experimental animation to explore migration that triggered 400 years of emigration from Britain between 1620-2020 - a single footprint rapidly escalates into patterns of human travel in the form of ‘abstract lines’ within the natural world to evoke meaning; suggesting epic voyages and connected narratives over long histories.

Three stop-frame animations made on the floor of my London flat using water, cardboard and home-made slime. Watermeadow, bog-eye & mudflats were made over a long period of time. The project was pulled together during successive pandemic lock-downs whilst imagining wide open marshland, swamps and mires of different kinds.

Synopsis

The world began with the Big Bang, we are told the walls of Jericho were decimated by trumpets, to music being used as torture or control, to persuade or even calm, to the soundtracks to war and music for revolutions. What is music and sound's relationship to control and power?

We have channeled this question through candid conversations with neural networks, by training machines on a collected sonic and visual history of noise, metal and rock music, as well as music that is sacred and spiritual. The project explores ideas around music as a weapon, as a cultural shifter, manipulator, unifier and ultimately, as a force.

The result is a non-stop fictional band performing endlessly, 24 hours a day. As the music infinitely changes, unique combinations of sound and visual will never be repeated. We have collaborated with AI music pioneers, Dadabots, combining machine learning, audio-responsive assets & procedural visuals inside VRChat to create a fully immersive real-time interactive environment. We are sonically at the mercy of the machine, as one never knows what will be performed on arrival.

In a dilapidated former Arctic research station, the Creature has been unknowingly enlisted by a military brigade into a bold new experimental programme. In a bedroom, perched on the edge of an unmade bed, a man looks out of a window at the falling snow. A blackbird settles on the windowsill and strikes up a song which comes to form a melody over which the man begins to sing of the murders of his wife and two little children. One by one, his son and daughter appear, and his wife turns, each sings a verse of their own. The man then tells of his own suicide. Finally, the blackbird flies away and the man returns to gazing out of the window.
