Synopsis

Whilst on a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Bellagio, Italy the artist meticulously recorded her experience through photography, text and video to create an installation that takes us on a disembodied journey through the labyrinthine gardens and ruins overlooking Lake Como. The passage of time, light, and people is central to this work where location and landscape become devices to explore enclosure and isolation - both physical and psychological states. Intersecting paths open out into seemingly impossible locations, mysterious doors set into the rock reveal secret passageways, and as the cicadas call, a sense of languor gives way to obsession and an unravelling of sanity. In collaboration with Robert Arnold. Available as a single split-screen film or a 2 channel installation.

Synopsis

Most of the source footage for “Camouflage with White Shirt” is selected from “Man with a Mission”, a TV documentary about Tony Blair. For the first six minutes, image and sound are cut and alternated to create a flicker effect with a rhythmic soundtrack, only snatches of it intelligible. The second part offsets Blair inspecting troops against Hugh Grant making his famous speech from “Love Actually”. In the third part, Peter Mandelson’s voice is heard praising Blair, against a shot of a wall in Berlin with an anti US/UK slogan painted on it in English.

Synopsis

Sequences of frames, sampled from a Big Brother broadcast on Channel 4 television, are repeated three times each in rhythmic succession. Nothing is slowed down or speeded up, but movement becomes unreal and fractured, parts of spoken words tumble out into a new stream of image and sound, and 'reality television' begins to look like Pop Art.

Synopsis

With the weather increasingly at the forefront of our news and media together with the idea that someone somewhere has their hand on the volume knob, End of the Street takes the original 19th Century Beaufort Wind Force scale and conjures a response, incrementally turning up the strangeness. Poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan produced the poetry specially. His interpretation of the wind scale transposes the action into the familiar surroundings of an average street. Imagemaker Andy Martin produces a mix of animated graphics, 3D, live action, photography and typographics all underpinned with a bespoke score by composer Robert Worby.

Described variously as, "a tour de force of Zizek's fascinating interpretations of fine cinematic moments," and "a rare documentary of unabashed intellectual aggression," this collaboration between director Sophie Fiennes and philosopher and public intellectual Slavoj Zizek represents the first film in a trilogy. Fiennes inventive direction places Zizek within the film moments he is analysing. He is "a genuinely interesting thinker" and "Oh what a brilliantly entertaining host Zizek turns out to be." Synopsis

One man's reflections on the last days of a dying relative.

Synopsis

Francis is an account of the creation of a 9-year-old 'defective' animated character. As the draughtsman’s hand goes to work and Francis attains animated consciousness, his behaviour is observed and assessed by a child psychologist. The boy’s responses – initially slow and apparently flawed – develop in unusual comic directions as the examination progresses. As his vocalisations begin to address the nature of his animated world and the psychologist continues to try and interpret his actions, it appears that Francis may ‘break out’ once and for all and become a ‘real’ animated character. Francis playfully addresses notions of construction and the role that language plays in interpreting, classifying and creating certain types. In an animated world populated by impressionable idiot figures, mischief-makers and oddballs with strange vocal mannerisms, Francis puts the cute but simple cartoon character into therapy for a case study of 'animated behaviour'.
