A feature documentary about Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympic and Olympic athlete who shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, and whose culpable homicide sentence was later overturned and replaced with a murder conviction by the South African Court of Appeal in December 2015. The film explores the tragedy of Steenkamp’s death; alongside a look at South Africa’s turbulent society. Over twenty years after Nelson’s Mandela’s seeming triumph over adversity, the country, born out of the violence of apartheid, has so far been unable to overcome the profound damage inflicted upon it – mired in racial tensions, a culture of gun crime, corruption and violence – and failing institutions seemingly unable to resuscitate the dreams of a nation.

Dante a teenager takes us on this brutally honest journey through Fruitvale, Oakland, where he explores aspects of his life; questioning the poverty, deprivation and abundance of guns within his community. Dante interviews local police officers, criminologists and local activists to give us the insight into the lives of many young black men living in contemporary American inner cities. Welsh Filmmaker Alex Melhuish gained valuable access to this Oakland community whilst he was living there as a student.

When the centre begins to have financial troubles with the real risk of closing, Sindiso must question her fundamental motivations. In the middle of the bustling city we watch as their worlds begin spiralling apart.

After his recent release from prison, AJ tries to get his life back on the right track. However, his efforts are met with equally frustrating results as he struggles to find work. With his family and friends reluctant to get too close, he finds himself isolated and defeated. Eventually finding work as a night watchman in an old 19th century town hall, AJ becomes relentlessly haunted by disturbing events of his past as he starts losing his grip on reality. With his immediate future seeming uncertain, he’s left to piece together what is left his fractured life.
