Synopsis

Four boys roam free through a neglected rural paradise in rural Wales during a long hot summer in the 1970s, untroubled by the adult world until tragedy strikes. Two of the boys are orphaned as their father murders their mother and, in turn, kills himself. The boys’ lives are shattered. Their older teenage brother is incapable of caring for them, and he becomes intent on revenge when he finds out that their mother was having an affair with a local farmer. The story unfolds through the eyes of the brothers’ best friend, Davy, who persuades the orphans to run away with him rather than be taken into care. But as the adult world closes in on them, Davy takes it upon himself to fix the situation and armed with his wits and a loaded shotgun, goes out to tackle the problem head on. A film about friendships, loyalty and love pushed to the very limit. An ultimately uplifting story of recovery with the bitter sweet sense that although something is lost, it can still be treasured.

For the audience it is both an epic physical journey and an intimate mental exploration. The story has moments of life and death, birth and burial and as such has much in common with the Tibetan book of the dead and the concept of the wheel of life.

In post-war England, journalist Stephen Underwood is keen to prove his worth. When he comes across the suicide of a Polish soldier from a nearby Displaced Persons Camp his journalistic instincts kick in, sensing something isn’t quite right, and his first port of call is to question Colonel Janusz Pietrowski, a Liaison Officer for the re-settlement of Polish troops under British command. Their meeting leaves Stephen unsettled – something just doesn’t quite ring true. Stephen’s lover is Jeanette Mitchell, a Junior Commander in the Auxiliary Territorial Service working under Captain John Underwood, Stephen’s brother. Trapped in a marriage of convenience with a military intelligence officer, she shares Stephen’s dream of escape. It is during one of their clandestine meetings that Stephen witnesses a confrontation between a local farmer and Michael Loboda, a new arrival at the Camp, during which Loboda lets slip that he is Russian... not Polish. Sensing a twist, Stephen questions Loboda to find out why he is posing as a Polish refugee. Loboda reacts aggressively but tries to give nothing further away. Later, unbeknownst to Loboda, Stephen discovers he is hiding a small cash-box containing a blood stained diary... From here, Stephen’s investigation escalates as he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous, multi-layered conspiracy concerning the execution of 22,000 Polish military and civilians by Stalin’s secret police. This is a fictional re-imagining of a bloody, heart-breaking, true tale. One that has been covered up for far too long.

Throughout her work Judith discovers a secret left on the cutting room floor – a mysterious woman who looks very much like herself. The woman is revealed to be Roberta's missing daughter Maddy, and who's presence is still very much felt throughout each frame of the unraveling archive. Roberta informs her 'That Maddy is coming home'.

Gemma and Will are shattered when their son dies in an accident. Gemma blames herself and starts to have panic attacks which affect her eyesight - and the audience's point of view. Will, tormented, believes he is hearing his son's voice calling out to him. To escape their grief Gemma suggests they take up friend Paul's offer to stay at his Lake District country getaway. Gemma tries to stop her panic attacks with medication, aided by ex-pharmacist Paul. Will, now thinking that he is unable to hear to his son in his bedroom back home, antagonizes Paul and then suddenly returns home. Gemma becomes increasingly reliant on Paul who appears to be developing genuine feelings for her welfare. Love, grief, and the frailty of the human condition are all brought to the fore as Gemma, Will and Paul are caught up in a descent into violence, both psychological and ultimately physical.
