Synopsis

This documentary is a Trojan horse; strikingly using richly layered animation to smuggle through the audience’s compassion fatigue a story of two Ugandan women affected by HIV/AIDS. The Beloved Ones has a distinctive visual style, lyrical and impressionistic. This lends itself to the depiction of an Africa that despite its problems is a home to full lives, not just a series of tragic statistics.

In the middle ages there was an outbreak of dancing manias in Europe that lasted hundreds of years. In the 20th century thousands of Chinese men and some women thought that their genitalia were vanishing, while schoolgirls in Belgium thought that they were being poisoned by a certain brand of fizzy drink. Looking at these various cases, and more, the professor takes us on a musical journey through mass hysteria.

Synopsis

A small town is infected by a deadly virus, and a frantic cover up is taking place. Three days after the initial contamination several special forces units are sent in on a recognisance mission, their objective; to measure the effects of the the virus and locate any survivors unaffected by the plague. The story follows the exploits of S.A.S Beta team who discover upon entering the town that not all the inhabitants have died from the disease, those that survived the plague have become rabid and wander the streets attacking those unaffected by the virus. Beta team are forced to abandon the streets and seek refuge in a house, their sanctuary quickly becomes a prison as the walking dead surround the building and the battle for survival begins.

This is Tomorrow is the latest collaboration between film-maker Paul Kelly and pop band Saint Etienne, and is the result of the year they spent as artists in residence at the Royal Festival Hall. It is a journey into the past and the future of this internationally renowned and much-loved architectural space and its epic refurbishment. The film features interviews with people who have made major contributions to the building and its architecture, including designer Robin Day, original architects Trevor Dannatt and Jim Cadbury-Brown, Southbank Centre's current artistic director Jude Kelly, artist Jeremy Deller and author Alain De Botton as well as builders, manufacturers, local residents and Southbank Centre staff.
