Synopsis

A film poem about London in the last hours of the twentieth century. It is composed of documentary footage shot between midday and midnight on 31st December 1999. I shot it in black and white at 16 fps and telecine-ed it at 25 fps in order to give it the jerky look of an old Edwardian film.

A dealing with the Orwellian concept of enforced surveillance, inspired by the increasing appearance of CCTV through the 1990s in the South East of England where the film was shot. The subsequent explosion of reality TV has added a further dimension; where the question isn’t so much who-watches-the-watchers, as who-is-left-to-watch.

Genetic profiling and engineering hold a potential for human transformation both good and bad. But who will be checking the morality of these scientific advances?

Using a mixture of animation and live action Canning Town Fox tells the true story of a hapless shoe salesman named Barney Banard who borrowed £30,000 from a one-legged loan shark named Beryl in order to buy up the world supply of Speed Brogues, (a new type of motorised shoe).   Unfortunately, it transpired that the company manufacturing the Speed Brogues were also illegally importing Nigerian Fighting Kittens, (hidden in crates of shoe leather) into this country. When the news broke Barney found himself unable to sell his Speed Brogues and as such had to find another way to repay the money that he had borrowed fom Beryl. After sometime he encountered an African national named Godfrey Breslaw who offered to share a fortune in gold doubloons with him, (which unbeknownst to Barney had been stolen from his girlfriend Athena's father several years earlier) if he helped to reclaim them. Unfortunately, when Barney went to pay off his debts Beryl smelt a rat and decided to tie Athena to a train track until Barney told her how he got the money and if there was anymore where it came from - And then things really started to get complicated.

Through a series of ghostly reminiscences a young man tries to piece together fragmented moments from the past, memories being triggered by admiration for his best friend Johnno. As the story unfolds, hero worship turns to revulsion, as the web of deception and violence that Johnno creates is revealed, pulling narrator and audience into its destructive wake. Manipulated live-action mutates and combines with ghostly digital animation.  

Synopsis

A poetic and compelling 16mm film shot in London, Karachi and Lahore which encompasses five stories relating to the times of day for Muslim prayer. The work explores overlaps between time, memory and location. Connecting different places and people through images and sounds, Eating Grass contains documentary footage accompanied by a voiceover in both Urdu and English. The textures of individual voices continually slip from one language to another, creating and repeating rhythms. Meaning is not only conveyed by what is said but also by building tonal rhythmical cadences, similar musical structures to those found in jazz or Indian classical music.

Emotions is a short experimental film , filmed with different coloured lenses, to portray how a person experiencing various emotions sees his surroundings.

A curious and remote coastal research site becomes a vibrant and graphic testament to impermanence. Using a range of experimental animation techniques the film studies both physical exposure to time and weathering, and photographic exposure to light, processing chemicals and mark-making directly on to celluloid.
