Synopsis

Get Real is the story of Steven Carter, an ordinary teenager from Basingstoke, Middle England, and his friends. Like most teenagers, they're desperate to fall in love: Steven's neighbour Linda with her driving instructor, his school friend Mark with Wendy, Wendy with Head Boy and all round dreamboat John, John's mate Kevin with Wendy's friend Jessica. But like most teenagers, they are pretty hopeless at it. Steven is in love too, but he knows it is impossible. It's just a dream. It'll never be real. Except it is. But there's a catch: Steven's lover won't acknowledge him in public.


Get Real is the comic tale of what happens when the dream becomes an unexpected reality, and forces Steven to choose between being himself and being in love.

Synopsis

Getting Hurt tells the story of Charlie, a successful lawyer and family man, who has his life thrown into turmoil when he agrees to take on the case of suspected murderer, Bosco. Bosco can be detained for only 72 hours and, with insubstantial evidence to back police suspicions, he is unperturbed by his situation. The only service he requires of Charlie is to find a girl called Viola.





Charlie finds Viola in Guido's late night bar. She is profoundly beautiful. The next day, incapable of thinking about anything else, Charlie returns to Viola's flat. He finds out that she is married to Bosco, a photographer, whose pictures of Viola adorn every wall in the building. Viola describes Bosco as a pitiably obsessed lover and asks Charlie to save her. The two of them fall in love. Charlie also rapidly becoming obsessed with the beautiful Viola.





Bosco is set free and wants Viola, but Charlie is not prepared to give her up. In the midst of her lovers' frustrations, Viola retains a certain impassive distance. The more obsessed they become with her, the less she wants to know. In their torment, the two men try to destroy each other. Bosco breaks into Charlie's family home and holds Charlie's daughter at knife point. But when Charlie comes in, Bosco turns the blade on himself committing suicide in Charlie's arms. Charlie's family life is shattered beyond repair. Charlie hunts for Viola but all he receives is a short call from her. She's leaving him, he's too obsessive. Charlie, the pitiable lover, is left alone, the inheritor of Bosco's ruin.

Girls' Night is an inspiring and poignant film from writer Kay Mellor, one of the most formidably talented writers in Britain today. Familiar to television viewers through her series Band of Gold and the TV movie Some Kind of Life, Kay has drawn on personal experience to tell the story of Dawn and Jackie.





The film focuses on how the lives of Dawn and Jackie are transformed when Dawn wins the jackpot at one of their regular Friday night bingo sessions. Their celebrations are cut short however when Jackie discovers that Dawn has a tumour and only a short time left to live.





Dawn decides against further treatment and is determined to enjoy the time she has left. Leaving startled families behind, the two women set off to fulfil a lifetime ambition and head off to Las Vegas.

Maria takes us back to an argument between Gary, a successful, working class business man, and his wife Tess, a television producer. Gary has followed Tess to a house where he believes she is sleeping with a writer, Alex. Fuelled by obsessive jealousy, Gary's repressed anger triggers a violent heart attack. He survives but is forced into a wheelchair. Tess takes the opportunity to start a sexually driven passionate affair with Alex.





A desperate Gary still wants to win Tess back and believes a heart transplant can save his marriage. Tragedy offers him hope when a 17 year old, Sean, is killed in a road accident caused by Nicola Farmer, high on cocaine. Sean's mother, Maria, agrees to allow his heart to be transplanted and Gary is the recipient. Tess walks away from the fantastic sex she is having with Alex to be with Gary.





As Gary regains his strength and tries to repair his marriage, Maria is left alone with her grief and her memories.





After confronting Alex and being humiliated at gunpoint, Gary goes looking for the source of the heart that is driving him and he traces Maria. Meeting Gary gives Maria's life meaning again. Gary takes all the information he needs but when he thinks he can walk out of her life Maria proves to be difficult. Tess tries to get rid of Maria but by now Gary trusts Maria more than he trusts Tess.





Desperate to confront Alex, Gary accidentally kills Tess, before murdering Alex and ending his own life.





A distraught Maria takes back Sean's heart from Gary and tries to return it to her son's grave. Caught by the police, she falsely confesses to murdering Gary, Tess and Alex.

The pace accelerates further as Sid and Gwenny rebel against circumstance to escape from their surroundings. Their inventive fantasies absorb and take hold over reality and they become Jack Kerouac and Joyce Johnson in a mythical America - the energised heroes of their own making - leaving Boyo and Mam behind with the brutal truth. House of America roars along the open road, roof down, radio blaring, hell bent on heroism. Where it takes us is funny and sad at the same time, but an impossible dream is better than 'if only'...
