Synopsis

Put the word ‘French’ before ‘woman’ and we think of a feminine ideal, perpetuated by newspaper and magazine articles and in books that sell millions of copies around the world. This film poses the question does ‘she’ exist or have we invented her and if so why? Pitching real, every day, French women in London and Paris alongside experts from the worlds of fashion, film, education, politics and journalism, the film explores the myths and truths, stereotypes and startling omissions in search of the identity of the modern femme française.

Synopsis

When London busker Barney inherits a tumbledown cottage in a rundown Spanish village, all he wants to do is sell it, and go back home – before the villagers discover that he is the son of the man who ruined the village in the first place. But to sell the house, Barney needs money to fix it up. So with help from local musician Paloma (and despite her ex-boyfriend’s interference), he sets about reforming the village band, aiming to win some prize money in an upcoming competition. However, when he stands in to play a trumpet solo at the funeral of the previous bandleader, his performance style inadvertently reveals that he is his father’s son – since their playing styles are exactly the same. How will the village react? And what will Paloma do now?

In post-war England, journalist Stephen Underwood is keen to prove his worth. Working for a local newspaper he spends his days covering weddings and funerals while always on the lookout for a story that will catapult him into the big league. When he comes across the suicide of a Polish soldier from a nearby Displaced Persons Camp his journalistic instincts kick in, sensing something isn’t quite right, and his first port of call is to question Colonel Janusz Pietrowski, a Liaison Officer for the re-settlement of Polish troops under British command. Their meeting leaves Stephen unsettled – something just doesn’t quite ring true. Stephen’s lover is Jeanette Mitchell, a Junior Commander in the Auxiliary Territorial Service working under Captain John Underwood, Stephen’s brother. Trapped in a marriage of convenience with a military intelligence officer, she shares Stephen’s dream of escape. It is during one of their clandestine meetings that Stephen witnesses a confrontation between a local farmer and Michael Loboda, a new arrival at the Camp, during which Loboda lets slip that he is Russian... not Polish. Sensing a twist, Stephen questions Loboda to find out why he is posing as a Polish refugee. Loboda reacts aggressively but tries to give nothing further away. Later, unbeknownst to Loboda, Stephen discovers he is hiding a small cash-box containing a blood stained diary... From here, Stephen’s investigation escalates as he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous, multi-layered conspiracy concerning the execution of 22,000 Polish military and civilians by Stalin’s secret police. This is a fictional re-imagining of a bloody, heart-breaking, true tale. One that has been covered up for far too long.

Judith's new job allows her the opportunity to view and catalogue Roberta's work – archiving but learning her alchemical techniques as she delves deeper and deeper into her past. Throughout her work Judith discovers a secret left on the cutting room floor – a mysterious woman who looks very much like herself. The woman is revealed to be Roberta's missing daughter Maddy, and who's presence is still very much felt throughout each frame of the unraveling archive. Roberta informs her 'That Maddy is coming home'.

As each individual pitches themselves recounting their story through interview and reenactments, the audience questions our perception of an interesting life, the role of the media and our basic, human instinct to leave a trace of ourselves for the sake of posterity.

Gemma and Will are shattered when their son dies in an accident. Gemma blames herself and starts to have panic attacks which affect her eyesight - and the audience's point of view. Will, tormented, believes he is hearing his son's voice calling out to him. To escape their grief Gemma suggests they take up friend Paul's offer to stay at his Lake District country getaway. Gemma tries to stop her panic attacks with medication, aided by ex-pharmacist Paul. Will, now thinking that he is unable to hear to his son in his bedroom back home, antagonizes Paul and then suddenly returns home. Gemma becomes increasingly reliant on Paul who appears to be developing genuine feelings for her welfare. Love, grief, and the frailty of the human condition are all brought to the fore as Gemma, Will and Paul are caught up in a descent into violence, both psychological and ultimately physical.
