Synopsis

The film tells the story of a seven year old boy who is obsessed by horror film monsters, football and his Dad. When his Dad dies, suddenly the boy is devastated. But one day he arrives back home from school to find his Dad apparently eating chips in the back parlour. His Mam tells him that it is his uncle from Australia, but the boy and his pals set out to prove that this is his Dad come back from heaven.

Victor Bukowski is an out-of-work actor with problems. He's got a lousy agent, he makes a habit of falling out with directors - and he's still in love with his ex-girlfriend Sylvia - who's marrying Dave tomorrow. Victor blames himself for causing the break-up of the relationship by telling her he was having an affair, and he refuses to let the past go. In desperation he has resorted to slashing his rival's tyres, bombarding Sylvia with flowers, losing all self respect in a vain effort to win her back. He discusses this with his exasperated best mate Freddy, the local tobacconist and anyone else who'll listen. And there's no love lost between Victor and Sylvia's best friend Alison. She thinks he's a phoney, neurotic clown - and she doesn't rate him much as an actor either. But Victor knows he and Sylvia had something special, something unrepeatable, and if only he'd played by the rules... When he pours his heart out to sympathetic barmaid Diane, he finds himself embarking on an unexpected and magical emotional journey, meeting aspiring novelist Louise along the way. Drunk and dishevelled, Victor stumbles into the pouring rain and decides to end it all. But then a dustcart appears over the bridge and Victor is rescued by two dustmen Rafael and Don Miguel. Just how different would life be if Victor could go back to that warm August Bank Holiday...

Synopsis

Nimi leads a relatively peaceful life amongst the female dominated Nigerian community in a picturesque coastal town in southern France. Life consists of working as a landscape gardener, looking after her eight year old son Sammy and attending exuberant masses at the local African church. Nimi's unmarried status (and son) are frowned upon by her traditionalist neighbours and her mother Nene is very keen to marry her off to confer her with respectability. When the handsome Reverend Fola moves into town and shows interest in Nimi, it is like a godsend for Nene who desperately attempts to get the two together. Nimi's son Sammy, however, has other ideas. He has confused writer Matthew, the creator of his beloved comic action hero Saracen, with his heroic creation and deems him a much more suitable match than the Reverend Fola for his mother. He tries at length to persuade Matthew to marry his mother instead, using every means at his disposal to unite them. Against their expectations, love blossoms. Although Nimi has resigned herself to marriage to the rather unexciting Reverend Fola, she is intrigued by Matthew. However, she is also very aware of Matthew's married status, distrust of women and general unwillingness to commit to a relationship. In contrast, Matthew is drawn to Nimi not just for her beauty, but the stability of her African way of life and an innate goodness which throws him completely off-guard.

The work of one of Wales' greatest story writers has been adapted into a full-length feature film. Y MYNYDD GRUG (The Heather Mountain) is based on Dr Kate Roberts' classic volume 'Te yn y Grug'. The framework is a simple story: a year in the life of an 8 year old girl called Begw, who lives in a cottage on the quarry-mining uplands in Caernarfonshire, North Wales, at the turn of the century. From winter to winter, from snow to snow, Begw's experience of life deepens, and her imagination as a budding author matures. Coinciding with Begw's story, as a background to and underlying the whole film, is a portrait of the hard mountain people, the chapel-goers and the rough-necks, the whole close-knit community which struggles to live on the stark slopes of the Heather Mountain.

Terry Gilliam’s first feature as a solo director, here gloriously restored, is a riotous tale of monsters, true love and medieval manners. Sometimes seen as a companion to 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', 'Jabberwocky' is pure, undiluted Gilliam. The most Python touch is the presence of Michael Palin – playing put-upon medieval peasant Dennis Cooper, who is forced to seek his fortune in a land of mud, gore and historically authentic junk food, whilst he is menaced by the hideous dragon ‘Jabberwock’. Riotously funny, the film is also a fascinating signpost to its director’s future – Dennis a definitive Gilliam hero, the little man terrorised by bureaucracy. Cathy and Reg have everything to live for: he has a well-paid job, they have three healthy children and a modern home. But when Reg loses his job, they find their life spinning out of control. Evicted by bailiffs, they face a life of poverty, illegally squatting in empty houses, sleeping in hostels and fighting to keep their family together. Originally made as a play for television play, Cathy Come Home was shot largely in original locations with a handheld camera, using voice-over narration by the protagonists. Loach's drama, using a single family to train the spotlight on the dire straits of England’s mid-century welfare structure, provoked a huge debate in parliament on first release.
