Synopsis

An elderly couple organise a Tea Party for a group of old friends.

But appearances can be deceptive, nothing is quite as it seems. Someone's in for a big surprise.

Synopsis

The Veranda is about a young artist, Victor, who tries to find silence in his actions and work. He finds it in dialogues with nature; he becomes obsessed and devotes his life to 'The Gaps', which to him become a mystical separate world that defy comprehension. Diving into this discipline, he loses his wife Josy, his friends and everything else in his life.

The actions Victor performs to find these Gaps are seen worldwide; cleaning sections of desert, or walking a mile and watering the parched land, just to see what happens. He places a tree in ice, cleans shadows on the road laid down by trees, polishes rocks at Whitby, and takes 1000m of string across a huge valley to make a Stringbridge - These performances, actions or Happenings are all to find something 'other'.

We meet Victor before and after his fifteen year quest. After various meetings with Charlie, who comes from the silent world he strives for, Victor has to decide between the faith of his Gaps and his last links to humanity, his sister Mina and his daughter Jo.

Synopsis

Based on a true story, Sergeant Peter King (Kenneth Cranham) of the Army Dental Corps, too old to fight, and Private Leslie Cuthbertson (Leo Bill), a trainee dental mechanic in the Corps, are thrown together by their passionate desire to see active service. Armed with just two revolvers and a dozen grenades, King persuades Cuthbertson to join him on a mission to occupied France.

In a letter to Winston Churchill, King explains their intention to invade France and fight the Germans. After a number of failed attempts, they finally arrive by boat and stumble across a German radar station. They succeed in blowing up what they believe to be the main Operations Room, but are soon forced to make their escape as the entire compound unexpectedly erupts with gunfire and explosions. After narrow escapes from the Germans and a stray mine in the Channel, the two men are picked up at sea and interrogated as spies.

Identified as deserters, they are returned to their barracks to be court martialled. At the eleventh hour King and Cuthbertson are saved by the arrival of Major Merton (Derek Jacobi), Churchill's Chief Intelligence Advisor. Their letter has been received in Whitehall and Merton corroborates their heroic story. Exonerated of lying, King and Cuthbertson are nevertheless reprimanded by the Court for their behaviour, but receive an invitation to tea with the Prime Minister should they ever be in Whitehall.

Synopsis

Joanne Conlon's local church are replacing their statue of the Virgin Mary. Joanne is appalled as her grandmother claims she once saw this statue cry. She takes the Madonna home. But her father, Frank, has just been sacked. Joanne's mother, Sylvia becomes an instant success as a bingo caller, but Frank is furious - shouldn't he be the breadwinner?

Joanne's Aunt Doreen places the statue inside her chip shop. That evening the statue cries once more. Now people come from miles to see the miracle! The local priest offers to take the statue back home. It doesn't stay in the church long. When the back of the statue's head comes off a sponge falls out. Doreen had 'encouraged' the Virgin to cry so she could sell more chips!

Sylvia is offered a singing assignment, but Frank forbids it. His anger and jealousy boil over. He throws the statue into the Mersey. Sylvia jumps in after it. Frank jumps in to save his wife, forgetting he can't swim. Husband, wife and mother of God are all saved by emergency helicopter.

Joanne finds the perfect home for the icon, on the grave of her grandmother. As the Virgin stands on the grave the icon starts to cry - all by herself!

Synopsis

It's 1927, the height of the Roaring Twenties, and Chicago is rife with corruption gambling, prostitution and prohibition.

Jimmy and his two Liverpool pals, Dan and Eddie, work as lowly waiters on a luxury liner. Always on the make, the three lads are pinning their hopes on getting enough money to jump ship in New York and start a new life in the USA.

They plan a ruse which nets them six bottles of gin from the ship's stores, which they know will fetch a good price in Prohibition America.

Unwittingly they sell them to two gangsters on the New York quayside, one of whom turns out to be the right-hand man to Al Capone.

It soon becomes clear that the trio have got themselves into a dangerous situation. A further complication is created by Jimmy's attraction to Edith, girlfriend to one of the gangsters.

When Capone's son is kidnapped and the lads are implicated, it's time to get out of town. But not before Jimmy's big fight and a small matter of Dan and Eddie removing the contents of Capone's vault to pay for their trouble.

The script is based on a real life miscarriage of justice that is part of Australian history.

On 30th January 1972, British soldiers shot dead 13 unarmed civilians taking part in a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland. The event, Bloody Sunday, was a major turning point in the history of the modern Irish troubles, catapulting a low intensity conflict into a civil war, driving many young men into the ranks of the IRA and fuelling a 25 year cycle of violence.

This film tells the story of Bloody Sunday in just one day from dawn to dusk, from the arrival of thousands of troops on the streets of the besieged city to the violent collision between soldiers from the crack Paratroop Regiment and the crowds of civilian demonstrators. The film follows the march organisers and the police, British soldiers, as well as civilians from both sides of the religious sectarian divide. It focuses in particular on the stories of two young men: Ivan Cooper, an idealistic Civil Rights leader, a Protestant in a Catholic camp, who shares Martin Luther King's dream of peaceful change; and Gerry Donaghy, a 17 year old Catholic rebel, who yearns to settle down and marry his Protestant girlfriend, but who is drawn into violent confrontation with the soldiers.
